What Tek-Vest is the Best?

Got the freestyle model, love it ,very light, hardly know you have it and has ventilation holes for when you work out on the sled so not too warm.
Wiped out once on hard icy trail to avoid another sled and fell flat on my back, got up unscaved, was very happy I had it.

(Seems to fit her better than me)

I love my Tek-vest even more today..

Short story, I went over the handlebars in an attempt to lawn dart while riding, BTW I was unsucessful and snowmobile followed me.. ran me over a little from what I can remember... anyway, chest back and shoulders ok...I hit the ground hard but it was nice and solid.

Now for my Jaw, Knee and shin, I need tek-vests for those parts of my body now...

I have run a Tek Vest for four seasons. This season I felt that the vest had a flimsy feel to it. I agree they do degrade over time. I'm in the market for another vest. I also agree that I feel naked without a vest.

For trail riding, the "best" vest is the one you are most comfortable wearing. Try them on before buying, ignore brand names and the nit-picky details some people and mfrs will tout, and buy whichever one that is most comfy and easy for you to use. Obviously racers need to meet certain certifications...trail riders do not need to sweat this detail.

There is a no more useless safety feature than the one you hang permanantly in your closet because after you first few rides you learned it's too hot/too cold/cuts into my side/bumps my helmet/is a hassle to put on/constricts my breathing/limits my mobility/whatever....ANY vest, even an old/expired or non-race-rated vest, will greatly increase your chances of survival in a crash than riding without one.

I'm very happy with my Tek Vest Super Sport other than the fact that it can be a bit too warm at times and lacks ventilation. Of course this is a good thing when the mercury drops below zero. I agree it runs small. At 190 lbs, I wear a "medium" and it's adjusted as small as it can go...I probably could have got by with a "small" as well.

Just get one you're comfortable with. And wear it.

Any recommendations on how to try a tek vest out out before buying one. As far as I am aware there are no tek vest dealers near by that I know of.
Thanks for all the reply's.

Most well stocked snowmobile dealers have a couple models to try on. (Be sure to visit non-Yamaha stores...frankly I've found Yamaha to be LEAST likely to have a variety of vests, I have no idea why). If you don't want to pay their name-brand premium price or don't want a competitive label on your clothes, just read the label carefully to figure out which mfr/model/size you're wearing...then you can seek out the unbranded twin that can then be ordered thru websites or mail-order houses. Ski-Doo has a nice variety of the Tek Vest brand...and all can be purchased without any Ski-doo labeling from other sources.

I bought mine few years ago at the Milwaukee snowmobile show that goes through there every October. Such shows are probably the best for one-stop comparison shopping...I tried 5 or 6 different ones on that were scattered all over the various dealer's booths...and that's where I found the Super Sport to be most comfy for me. By pure luck it happened to be labeled as a closeout and I got a ripping deal...just a bit over $150 brand new if I recall. I've never seen it so cheap anywhere else. That's the side benefit of the shows...many venders and dealers at those shows are discounting at the same time.

I highly recommend sitting down on a sled while you try them on. A few I found have a stiff tailbone protector that can bump the seat when you sit. This causes them to ride up really high on your body, and can be irritating if they're pushing up against your chin or back of your helmet.

Not sure how close Milwaukee is to where you are in WI, but I drive to that show almost every year from central Indiana...and always find it to be well worth the time and fuel.

I see they have one in Green Bay also. I'm not sure how it compares to the Milwaukee show as I've never gone to Green Bay for it.

Good luck!

I actually very close to Milwaukee and I go to that show evey year. So I will defiantly check everything out that is there. Thanks for the info.

bring your snowmobile jacket as well. Try it on over the vest. You may find your jacket is now too tight...

Very good advice on trying your jacket on over the vest!

Here's the reply from Tek Vest on the life of their product:

"There is no shelf life on a Tekvest (unlike Soccer Gear!)

The only real time when you should update your vest is when impact has been made and the material has been torn and there is visible damage."

I bought a Tekrider PTG snowmobile suit and got a free Tekvest. I rode 3500 miles this year and have realize that everything I wore before was junk.

Perfection !!! one word !
