Been reading alot on this subject. What do I do if its bitterly cold out and she won't start on the first try?

1. Try firing again and risk fouling plugs.
2. Pull fuel pump relay, warm up and replace and try again.
3. Try to start and slowly increase throttle to wide open.
4. Hold throttle wide open and try to start.

I have also heard of people pouring boiling water over the motor a couple times and it seemed to work?????

Any other techniques I could try. It is common to be -30 in the morning up here and I am getting nervous about it not starting. It is in my heated garage for the most part, but going out to friends camps and drinking is going to be common soon and I have to park it outside for the night.

Would running iso mixture help with gas issues and not harm motor?

Is there a updated or cross-referenced sealed relay for the fuel pump?

Thanks guys.

Trevor

I've been told that coolant heaters are not a good idea for open loop fuel injected sleds because of the the resultant mis-reading of engine temp and an incorrect start-up fuel map. Not your experience?

The only relay that u can buy is the new and improved one. The 07 has thenew relay. As for Iso in the gas, if u keep your sled in a heated garage u should always run it. due to the condensation u get in the tank when u warm the sled up in the garage. I do any way. As for the fuel pump relay, when u go to start the sled just turn the key to on and listen 4 the fuel pump running, if u hear it then u should be getting fuel pressure unless the fuel line froze because u didn't put in Iso. It won't harm u'r motor. I've read on here that some of the sled take a couple of starts to keep them running and some that foul after one start. I think that it is a crap shoot. As 4 boiling water, I've done that 2 car engines and its worked so I don't see it not working on u'r sled except for maybe the issue of drainage. I've read about guys with the coolant heater on the fuel injected sleds not starting after having them plugged in. They suspect that the heat rising off the engine is giving the intake air temp sensor a false reading and a suspected lean conition on startup.

In the US, at least in Minnesota, it's virtually impossible to find 87 octane gasoline that isn't 10% ethanol, in which case adding isopropyl alcohol is unnecessary...in fact a bad idea.

over 4,000 mi. with it on there and i used and never had one problem, never fouled a plug, where did you get that info?

My dealer, Yamaha, here on TY4, and my son who's a Yamaha service tech.

Yamaha sells a coolant heater for the Vector, it's listed in their catalogue as being only for carbureted sleds. However, I do note on their website now that it's listed for ALL 4-stroke models.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/p.../5/436/1782/12889/2008/1/2726/0/0/detail.aspx. I also note that the Yamaha coolant heater is now listed as an accessory for the Apex on Yamaha's own accessory web site. So, looks to me like maybe you were ahead of your time.

it's on there website under accessory kit's, been there since 06' check the attak which is called the ltxgt now it's there ;)!

I haven't been sledding in weather colder than minus 20 deg. F for many years. That was back in the days before fuel injection.

However, we would give a shot of ether to the air box when it was really cold back then, and it would start right up.

Would there be a problem doing that to the new fuel injected machines?

Probably a small shot wouldn't hurt, but just like a car engine too much is not good as it washes the oil off the cyl walls and u loose ring seal and it won't fire.

You should be alright, since you have the new fuel pump relays in your sled. My sled was up in Elliot Lake in -30 and it fired no problem. Don't sweat it.. But I would put some iso in the fuel. Northern Ontario gas sucks.

Keep gas tank full during storage of sled in garage,
outside or where ever and heated garage, partial heat garage , or no heat has no effect.

Condensation does not form in full tank no matter what the temp !
Before you park sled for the night always let it idle for a couple of minutes.

Next morning add boost box to battery ends before you try to start then
start like normal ! Apexs will start at 35 below !

Worst thing you can do is take a really cold sled
and start warming air in say an enclosed trailer
then try to start them !

Start sled first before you start to warm trailer !

I know its backwards but
thats how you should or need to do it !

;)! ;)! ;)!

Alright, I'll start running Iso.

As for the fuel pump relay. I have already had a no start due to the fuel pump relay. I believe it is due to moisture inside the relay (cycled key on-off 10 times and finally picked up). Is there a cross-referenced relay from another manufacturer that is sealed? Would drying it out for a while and siliconing the hell out of it help?

Maybe! U'd have to cut it open to make sure that all the moisture is gone and then reseal. I don't know that I would trust it. Where did u get the part, what is the part no. and cost?
