What's the best rear heat exchanger to use for the RX-1?

I'm one of the fellows who had his "overtemp light" come on consistantly last season when trail riding. Someone said they were using a Polaris rear heat exchanger because it was 13" wide and allowed running the entire plumbing under the tunnel extension. I like the idea of a clean installation. Another said they had used a Viper rear heat exchanger. I'm all for using Yamaha parts if possible but is it 13" wide so I don't have to run the coolant lines on the sides of the tunnel extension? Who has done this and can provide their lesson learned and maybe some pictures? Powder Blue

It was typically the guys with the Mountain RX-1 that experienced the over heat problems. For me it happened on the trail whne there was none or very little loose snow on the trail. A couple days the snow was like concrete and all of us on Rx-1s (and the Vipers too) never had a chance.
There was a guy who said he used a 13" wide RMK rear heat exchanger. I'd like to see a picture of that setup too. If I could save myself a favor from my welding buddy and not have to reposition the inlets and outlets so much the better. I may have to take a look at a Polaris dealer.

If you know someone that can weld aluminum the old polaris xlt under the running board heat exchangers work great. You just cut it to the size you want and weld on a spigot to each end and it will replace the cross over tube that is there now and it has plenty of meat on each side of heat exchanger to drill holes for riveting. I put on on my 600MM turbo for extra cooling and theres lots of recked old polaris out there so you should be able to source one cheap.

Hey PB, if you would stop riding the trail so much you wouldn't have to worry about the thing overheating so much. Just jokin buddy.
I thought your ice scratchers and the water wetter fixed the problem for the most part.

"J", yes it did except for the days where it had rained on top of the snow or thawed and then froze and the snow was like concrete. You and Kit too saw personally how much fun it was having to baby your sled when all you really wanted to do was romp on it all day. The bright spot was; I did get my best mileage babying my sled trying to keep from over heating :)

You know, I think even moving the coolant crossover tube to the back of the tunnel extension (where the snow actually hits it) would do a lot of good. All it took was a quick romp in the powder (if there was any to dip into) and the overheat light would go right off, right? Hum???

I honestly would like to find a 13" wide RMK rear heat exchanger (a flat one). I really want it to be light weight and a VERY clean installation with no noticable additions to the tunnel extension.
I'm even starting to think that just maybe we could get by with just repositioning the crossover tube to where snow actually hits it (on the inside of the very rear of the tunnel extension). Powder Blue

I am hoping for one hell of a winter this year. Then yes, homey will get off the trail a bunch more. But, oh what a trail system it is! You can put on 100 miles a day easily. You can see triple digits on the trail repeatedly as you go through the wide sweeping turns down along the river.
I have to say I'm starting to have almost as much fun going like hell on the trail as climbing. Boondocking has a special place in my heart though. I guess it's the Lewis and Clark spirit in me that always wants to see what's over the next hill. In the meantime you have to climb that hill and I enjoy the hell out of that. I still think a 16" track would help our rather portly sleds spead its mass over a wider area and maybe keep us from sinking on occassion? Powder Blue

Q... Is the Yamaha mtn dove tail long enough that a 02 mtn maxx rear cover would hide the hose if you moved the crossover tube to the back????? It worked great on a Mtn perf extension using Napa 9818 heater hoses.

Now that might be a great idea. I'll have to look into it. I still envision the entire hose setup running under the tunnel extension. Maybe I should just bend a big U shape that just fits inside the tunnel extension and run it back and hook it up with your Napa heater hoses on the front end? PB

Having the hose on the outside keeps me worry free, the Mtn cover fits under the exhaust faux covers, and this year I am going to get a sx rear cooler, turn the hose ends 90* and mount the cooler to the underside of the extension. All I need is a welding favor :D If I ever get my seat back from the shop (warranty) I will put it all back together and post up a picture.
