Ok I sold my RX-1 turbo last spring for a down payment on my house and because I was frustrated with breaking stuff all the time. Now Im looking at a newer sled. I was gunna get an 06 or 07 mach z but have heard bad things about their reliability so Im sticking to what I know is a good machine... yamaha!!

Im looking at several lightly used apex's some 06 and some 07. I know 06 was the first year of the apex, is there anything that they had problems with on the 06 that was fixed on the 07?? Or anything that needs upgrading if I buy an 06?? I have found an 06 with 400 miles on it in mint condition for $5800, does that sound like a decent deal???

If they had problems with the 06 I will spend the extra and get an 07 but I would rather keep my cost down some if possible....

Thanks guys!!!

Thanks for the help guys!!

There are a couple of differences that were corrected from 06 to 07:
- 07 has upgraded handlebars for better heat, albeit not a whole lot better
- 07 had newer idler wheels that wouldn't delaminate at high speeds

For both of these issues, Yamaha offered updated bars for the 06 and replaced any bad inner idler wheels. Just ask the owner if he had them replaced. Regarding the bars, several good threads about this in the FAQ so you might want to check out this thread pinned at the top of this forum.

Yamaha might have upgraded the chaincase too in 07. There were some reports from high speed riders on wide open long runs that had some chain case issues.

Other than that, not much changed. I just got rid of my 06 Attak and it was flawless for four years.

Regarding the price, that is average to just above average. I suspect you could knock it down a couple hundred.

Yes your right, '07 have a REVISED chaincase cover, '06 had a smaller lip surface sealing to actual case and tended to suck in GASKET and leak oil without you noticing while riding and eventually GRENADING it! this seemed to happen more frequently to HIGH speed riders, the other thing is to add more venting to your existing dipstick, it helps avoiding this situation, otherwise its a great sled...

The 06 to 07 apex gt does have some more gusseting and alot more rivets in the back support area, some 06 gts had some rear tunnel bending, but some of that was from the ohlin's rear shock failing, some had wires rip out and they rerouted them a little better from 06 to 07 as well, the reason i know this is last year my bud still had his 06 gt and i bought a leftover 07,now other than the chaincase and bar warmers and wheels, that was all i thought had changed, but after some hard comparing between the two,the 07 was the better choice!

get the 06>its cheaper>low mileage>still has the stock oil in it!! for under a $200+- it will be like a 07. great price for that sled! :4STroke:

Apex

I have both an 06 and an 07. The differences are as discussed already. If its a GT the rear spring went from 5.1 to 5.5kg. On all Apex's there were reinforcement plates added to the inside of the tunnel, which can be added to an 06. The 06 is a perfectly fine sled if you take care of the bars and cut a slit in the chaincase dipstick cap to provide better ventilation. If its a GT, send the shock out to Pioneer Performance and have a re-valve with a bigger spring put on, and you'll be good to go. I personally run the 06 bars with an 07< electrical sub-lead. 3 bars on the scale and your hands are hot. I've been 4500 miles with it and no problems.

The 07 apex gt ohlin springs that came stock in mine is the 4.9 spring and the next step from yammie is the 5.5 which i got by mistake from my dealer, and we installed it,but i like the 4.9 stocker better for general riding, but carver is doing my rebuild this fall on all three shocks and he can get the 5.2 from sweden that he likes better than the one yamaha has made from ohlin at the described 5.5 lbs, mike said you only want the spring to be used for the sag or ride in,instead of using it in replace of a good rebuild job,he states yamaha comes with the same single stack they have been using for years and years,i have run the dump truck springs before so this time i wanted to get a better rebuild job over the last place i had it done in,so carver will get my buisness this time around.
