Where does the reverse fork go????

I changed the chaincase oil yesterday and then took the cover off to make sure everything looked ok. It did and I reassembled it and it won't go in reverse. The skid is out so I cant really gas it but it goes forward no matter where the lever is. When I reassembled it the reverse fork is on the outside of the gear. Is it supposed to be inside the gear?

I guess my question is does the putting it in reverse push the gear in or pull it out??? If it pulls it out I will be taking it apart again!!

I haven't put oil in yet so at least it won't be messy!
