Heres my bad trip story, my question is at the bottom:

So 2 weeks ago we had some snow in northern MI. I had bought my phazer just days before so we headed up north. About 15 minutes into our drive up there, I took my keys out of my pocket to confirm that I had them. Both were on there, my primary and spare. Now I was going to put the spare in my wallet, and obviously the other one in a safe place. Well, I got sidetracked somewhere and set the keys on my lap, which had to have fallen out on one of our 4 stops on the way. I didnt realze that I didn't have my keys until 2 hours later. We were about at our destination so we finished our drive there, checked into our hotel and tore my buddies truck apart looking for them. Nothing. So instead of going out for a nice night ride right when we get there, we're calling Mcdonalds, gas stations, everywhere we were trying to see if they found any keys... nothing.

So we decide to goto bed, and hit the local dealers in the morning. Well, after calling several dealers and locksmiths, we find a dealer an hour south. I pull the ignition out of my sled, and we take in in there. We went through about 200 yamaha sled keys looking for the number that matched up to my ignition. Finally, one of the guys finds a match out of a new sled. So they cut me a copy and very excited, me and my buddy make our hour drive back to the hotel, to re-check in and finally hit the trails.

Well, we did all that, warm up the sleds and hit the trail. Not even 5 miles in, my buddies throttle cable breaks on his 03 rev 600. Unbelieveable. There was only one shop around that had the cable, and they closed at 5. So on the last day of our trip, we go get the cable. We figured we'd have a shop install it so we can get it done quick. It was sunday and no shop was doing service. So we try to do it ourselves. We realize it is going to be a royal pain to do it. From there we lost all hope. I went out ont he trail by myself for a little while. I only got to put just under 100 miles on my new Phazer. It was such a crappy trip...

ANYWAY, I have a key right now that works. But its really big and ugly looking, and you kind of have to jimmy it around sometimes to get it to turn. So, does anyone know how to get the key that i need without buying a new ignition/key set? Anyone eve had this happen to them, or am I the only idiot?

I'v lost several yamaha keys but I have never had problems of getting a new. I'v just pulled of the egnition, reading nr on it and ordered a new key from my local dealer. Last year I ordered a key to my 1988 phazer and had in in a week.

Did you get the key # from the one you copied? Should be able to order a new one from that.

Keys are cheap....there's usually a number stamped in the switch, like 460. That's the number..order 5 then you're set for life lol. I memorized the key number for my boat so I can stop on the way up to the cottage and get one when I forget it at home :).

Yea, I know all of the numbers on my ignition and the number of the key that I need. I just didnt know if it was harder than that to get a key. And yea, I will probably order at least 3 when I do get new ones. Just because of all the anger I had when I couldn't ride my brand new sled the first day and a half of hour trip. Never again!

My spare key is always hidden somewhere in the engine bay just in case!
