I am going to give in and install a set of handguards or gaunlets, however I don't know what to purchase. I dont have a riser and run the xxlarge windshield but my righthand just is ice cold (gloves too thick), and I have Roc's handwarmer mod kit also. I always thought the handguards would hit the windshield and not allow a full turn.

So what are the opinions of the RX'ers out there? Handgruards or Gaulents? Why? How much and where to purchase?

we use powermadd gaurds and they only touch at full turn on the extra tall wind sheild. i also use their gauntlets when i need some.

Dan, although I don't have them on the RX-1 (yes, still have the beast) due to it being a backup for the other two Apex's, I really like Skinz' Heat Loc Hand Guards (Trail Series). With Rock's Yamaheaters and these protecting my hands from the wind, they have never gotten cold. Well, only once and that was during our Christmas/New Years trip to the U.P. this year when it was single digits and I thought I only needed Rock's thumb warmer on the new Apex. Rather than take the one off the 08 Apex, I ordered another set from Rock for the 18. Before putting these hand guards on my new Apex, I had them on my Nytro which is the sled my son rode. It too had Rock's Yamaheater and thumb warmer and he never complained about cold hands like he used to when it had the stock hand guards (it was the 40th anniv RTX). And with these hand guards being flexible (i.e. not hard plastic), even if they made contact with your extra tall wind shield, they would still allow a full turn.

OK, thanks Rob. Do you have a link?

If you want to have color option other than black, you may have to purchase through Skinz direct. Although they are a little more expensive than what you can find online if black is the color you want, the good thing about purchasing from them is that you will be guaranteed they are the newer style and have the strip of rubber lugs to fit tight around the handle bar. They also changed the material of the handguard that hopefully you can see in the pictures. If you did get the older style, Skinz does sell those rubber lug strips individually. Before updating to the new style, that is exactly what I did to my old ones and they helped keep the handguards in place on the handle bar.

Wow, thanks Rob. Im a little confused. So do these work alone by just velcroing around around the handlebars? or do they need to be placed over a harder hand guard? Do you have any mounted pics up close?

Dan, yes they work alone by velcroing around the handle bars and there is no plastic inner shell. When you go to that link, you will need to scroll down to the heat loc hand guards section. They have a trail and pro series with the pro series offering more wind protection but they were to large for my liking. Here's an image from that link. I circled in red the velco strap that utilizes that rubber lug strip since it grabs better over not just the bars but also the cabling. Older style just used a strapped and wasn't as tight and would also allow the guard to rotate on the bar; those rubber lugs prevent that. As for the other end of the hand guard, it just velco straps around the ends of your bars.
