So I went ahead and bought a Garmin Nuvi 500. Now looking to buy a ram mount. The cradle is easy but there are so many different options to attach it to the sled I'm getting a little overwhelmed. I'm putting this on my vector. Which is the one I want. Pics along with what you like/dislike would help a lot. Sorry if this has been covered before but I came up empty on the search.

Mount it to the riser. It's out of the way there, and won't be a distraction, plus it's centered on the handle bar pad, which gives it a cleaner look. I purchased a handle bar mount with a U bolt bracket, and just discarded the bolt. I used some stainless screws and worked a combination wrench and nut inside the riser to secure the bolts.

X2 on the motorcycle mount with the 3" arm mounted to the driver side of the riser. vvmapping for the trail maps even though I just order redpine because I want to try it and then give review.

Bottlerocket,
I have Redpine's Michigan map loaded on Lowrance. Overall, I'd give it a good review. There is one trail (Trail 88) in the U.P. that wasn't completely marked for some reason, but I've made my own trail to fill in that gap - otherwise, it's been pretty much right on. I know I had to fiddle with my settings to disable some stuff otherwise things were just too cluttered, but like I said - I'm happy with Redpine's map. I like it enough that I'll probably order the Wisconsin map soon.

Thanks for the replies guys. That was exactly what I was looking for. I like the look of your mount Marq. I'll order the handlebar mount and use it on my bike in the summer as well. Heard good things about redpine and will most likely go that way. Now to hard wire it in!

Great post - Any chance you have the part number? Did you hardwire it or do you plug into the 12v?

GPS City is the way to go. If you go to their website, you can pull up all different mounting options for your particular model. You don't mention what kind of GPS you're using, but this a link for the mount that the original poster would need:

If you look below in the recommended accessories space, they usually offer a bare wire plug, so that you can hard wire on your own. That's what I did. The only problem I encountered is that my bare wire plug has a reducer (most GPS's run on less than 12 volts). The reducer has a green LED light that lets you know when you have power. I don't know how long it would take to drain your battery, but I didn't want to find out so I went to Radio Shack and picked up a toggle switch, and installed it between the battery and the power cable. I used electrical tape and taped it to one of the jump start leads coming out from the battery. All I have to do is remove the hood and flip the switch and I'm good for the day. I don't worry about turning it off at bar stops or gas station stops. You could of course mount the switch on your dash, but I like that it's hidden.

I didn't realize that you were in Canada - GPS City has a Canadian website too http://www.gpscity.ca/gps-mounts

Marq, thanks for the info and including the link. Made my day.
The toggle switch is a great idea as well.

What about just tapping that harness into the brake wire or the headlight circuit? It's very low draw and then you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn off the toggle switch...

Has anyone installed a ram mount on the sled at a location other than the riser, such as next to the instrument cluster?
On my previous RX-1, I had a "dash-mount" just to the left of the speedo, which worked fine for me. Now that I have the Apex that option seems somewhat limited, taking into account the clearance issue with the bars from lock-to-lock.

I didn't realize anyone else had replied to this post - sorry for the delay.
You could absolutely go that route and not have anything to worry about, but then you wouldn't have power when the sled is shut off, right? I know my GPS has an internal battery only, and from being plugged in all the time the battery is just about shot. In cold temps, I'm lucky if I get a few minutes before the battery dies. I tend to look at my GPS more when we take breaks at intersections or on the side of the trail so that's why I opted for a toggle.
