which ski for '05?

i have been reading the excellent posts on this board for a while now and am seriously considering spring ordering an rx-1.....i am concerned about cornering and handling..i would like to hear opinions about aftermarket skis.....simmons and c&a seem to be the ones to have...i do high trail mileage and very little powder or ditchbanging...i would have to say cornering is most important with darting a close second...any input will be appreciated thanks in advance....jeff

The stock RX1's have been a little finicky on the trails, but with a small amount of patience, they can be made to corner real well. The first thing is to put higher rate straight rate front springs on and drop the preload to zero, then set the transfer rods to minimum and suck in the straps until it feels like you're driving a bulldozer, then increase the transfer until you like it.

In addition, aftermarket skis are REQUIRED EQUIPMENT. Not because the stock skis don't turn well... they actually turn VERY well, but because they are DANGEROUS. The sled needs much more flotation than those skis give... if you ride on the wrong thickness of crust with the stock skis, you suffer high liklihood of going into uncontrollable barrel-roll when the skis start breaking through into the soft snow under. I ride Simmons.

LB, I'm spoke to the people at Simmons and they were not sure if the 05 Yamaha saddless ski would have any effect on the mounting of a pair of exsisting simmons, I assume they'll have the same mounting points. Do you have any advanced info? I'd like to get a couple of sets for my 05 rx1 and rs vector. What carbide combo do you recommend? Thanks

With 96 studs, either 4" in all four or you can run 6" on the outside and 4" on the inside. I have ridden both and prefer the latter.

We had this discussion about Simmons carbides a couple of months ago. I contended same as you and was proved wrong then. Go check Simmons website. Their own video clip shows the longer carbide should go on the INSIDE. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw it either.

I started out running flats on the inside and 6" cutters on the outside. Once I saw the video and switched them around, sled handles better. I have Simmons on my 03 LE and my 02 Viper ER. With the roads as bad as they are around here now, I'm considering changing the outside bars to 6" cutters too.

You may find that the height of the bolt on trhe saddleless ski is the same as the ski with saddle. I originally had C&A but foud them to me too aggressive for my riding style, switched to Simmons on my last two sleds.

No difference. Look at the Viper skis. The difference in the Viper skis from 03 to 04 is that they went saddleless in 04. The "column, ski-assy" (which is the only part that would be affected by a different ski) had the same part number both years. In addition, the ski saddles for the 03 Viper and 03/04 RX1 have the same part number, AND the skis are nearly identical (Viper ski just has a shorter keel).

Don't ask me anything about the RS, but I *predict* that the Simmons for RX will fit them as well.

As for wearbars, I'm still on the original, but for next season I'm switching to 6" bergstrom all around.

RippinV, Simmons are about $400 list for the skis. I think the carbides go for $45 for the 4" and $70 for the 6", but I could be off a little.

I generally don't do a lot of after-market products, but these skis made a huge difference in cornering, flotation, and steering. Well worth it IMO.

I run the Simmons, and I have the Bergstrom triple 6 inch on the inside and a single 4 inch on the outside, unbelievable difference from the stock carbides that came with the ski's.

Simons come with 4" carbides but can be upgraded to whatever you want.
