Anyone done a do-it-ur-self muffler gut job? How did it go? Any suggestions as to best technique and approach? Any difference except for more noise. I've heard claims of 5HP gain and weight savings of 6 or 7 lbs. Seems like a well spent afternoon of chopping and welding if the potential for performance increase is there for free. Thoughts?

I have and its quite a bit lighter and louder. Everyone likes the sound. No idea about the HP gain. I had it done at a muffler shop, $40.

Hey Indy,
Do you kow if they removed ALL the innerds, or just specific parts? I have the capability to do it myself, but I don't want to remove something thats there for a specific reason... backpressure, etc. Thanks for the help. Also, is it obnoxiously loud or just pleasingly opened up? We have decibel level laws in VT and they DO check them, on the trail. Big fine if too loud.

I gutted mine I took out all the stuff in the center section. It will make sense when you open it up.It is quite a bit louder then stock how much I don't know for sure.It can get annoying at consant trail speeds but depends on where you ride on sled I ride sucked up tight to the tank not to loud here but scoot back to strech out and it is much louder.I love the sound. This is how they should sound from the factory.

I did mine, open up the bottom and remove the 2 tubes with holes in them, then drill three 5/8 holes in each of the solid tubes.Remove the two cones were the exhaust enters the muffler. I live in Vt and its not too loud, sounds good.

Gutted it completely. Sounds great except at 80 mph it will rattle your teeth a little, but at 83+ its fine. I like the sound, so does everyone else. I will turn a few heads.

So what was the before and after weight difference. Any real numbers

When I gutted the inside of mine it can't be more than 3 to 4lbs of material in the actual can. It does sound much better though, however you don't save a whole lot of weight.

Pretty hard to determine with all the different parameters invovled with riding. Don't think I would waste time dynoing over a gutted stock can for real gain numbers. If there is any gains they would be minimum IMO

I can pretty much garrantee you that not everyone likes the sound. Have you guys not been reading about (a) trail closures (b) sled access to gas stations and streets in towns being closed because of noise?
I have no problem with doing whatever you want if you stick to the track, but gutted exhaust and stingers are affecting everybody and for the life of me, I can't understand why people use them with no performace gain and maybe a 2 pound weight saving.

I was asking if there WAS a weight savings and performance gain. There must be some gain in HP by opening up the restriction on the exhaust. If its only 2 HP and its a free mod, why not? 2HP is 2HP. We pay a lot of money for a few HP and added MPH here and there. It may well have slightly better fuel mileage also. I'll bet a completely gutted RX1 is still quieter then any 2 stroke with aftermarket pipes.

2 HP at the expense of the whole sport. If you are out trail riding do you think you are going to see a 2 HP diff when you have 150 already. How many more trails need to be shut down before this sinks in. If its rattling teeth at 80 I doubt if it is any quieter. Besides 2 HP could come from the Card in the spokes effect. Sounds louder so it must have more HP!

I would be interested in knowing how many trails were actually shut down due to noise vs. how many you've been told were shut down by someone who has no clue? Many Many trails are closed or rerouted due to new land owners and or eminent domain every year. Also helping to aid trail closure is individuals tearing up private property, and not being competent enough to read trail signs. (STAY ON TRAIL) Granted high noise levels are just one parameter in determining trial routes but we don't sit here and boycott Bender, Whiteknuckle and everyone else that manufactures opportunity for higher db levels. The stock RX-1 exhaust gutted certainly shouldn't threaten the sport of snowmobiling.

Completely gutted for 2 yrs. Sound is great.
AND NO...IT's NOT LOUD ENOUGH TO SHUT DOWN TRAILS. It's not a vance and heinz, it's just got no baffles. I'm actually laughing at the post saying that's why trails are shutting down.
It's 1/3 what a triple pipe sounds like. :ORC
