I rode Indy's RX1 with the gutted exhaust and it is quieter than most 2 strokes. 2 strokes have a high pitch which carries for miles. A 2 stroke is acually louder from a distance than next to it. I used to race Go Karts and our local track was being threatened to be shut down. It was from the 2 strokes. 1 mile away from the race track the noise was very annoying, we as a result had to put mufflers on the 2 strokes. Four strokes with open exhaust where ok. Saved the track, still racing at that track today. Gutted RX1 exhaust are not to loud. Lets all slow down when in residential areas and be light on the throttle. When where out of town go for it. I truly believe loud exhaust is a problem with a few trails but by far a greater problem is boondocking off the trail system, this is creating more trails to be re-routed and closed. Please stay on the trail. Just my 2cents. Oak Hill

Just an FYI for everyone.
The other day I was driving by a lake and there were some riders going across the lake parallel to the road. I pulled over my van and opened up my windows to let my two little boys observe them. These riders were about 1000 to 1300 ft from my van. My wife and I were ASTONISHED when after opening up the windows to let the boys hear the sound of the sleds that we could hear absolutely no noise. NONE!!!!!!
They were riding Polaris and Ski-doo.

I traded a perfectly good 03 turbo for a 05 because of the noise. They are looking at your sled when crossing into Canada at the boarder and the fines are at $300 us if they catch you on the trails....... plus your Canadian bagger trip IS OVER. I loved the sound BUT always felt unconfortable whenever I went past homes or businesses.

GIVE ME A BREAK.
My gutted can is quieter than my SX500.
Enough said. Oak Hill ran behind me some I believe at the last TY Muni ride. Plus he rode Indy's. Plus I rode behind Indy some of the day and it didn't sound loud at all.
Any thoughts other than it being just fine??? Nope. Plus I've ridden by cops in the Grand Marais area that DO have a noise ordinance. Did I get pulled over. Nope.

I still havn't heard anyone say they had to rejet. Do you? I would like to hear the motor over the ripsaw. Stock my 03 will sneak up on skiers in the woods it could be louder with no problem. I cant imagine it being as loud as a triple piped 700. If it is let me know because I dont want that much noise.
No need to rejet for most any exhaust mods on the RX's. You would consider it if you were making other mods as well, such as intake.
I am not sure if you have a ECP filter kit on there or not, but at least you would gain some with that. The ECP also offers a nice raspy sound from the intake instead of the exhaust. Its not free, but at least its a proven HP increasing mod.

I must be the oddball here, but I find my 2005 RX-1 way too loud, especially the track. It's 100% stock.
We live on a 43 acre lot with the house almost 400 feet off the road with a dense forest in between.
My wife can hear my sled coming down the road from about 1/2 a mile away - and I'm typically only doing about 45 mph. All she can hear is the track howling away. All my neighbors say they always know when I go sledding with the RX-1.
When I take the '97 Storm out, also with a 1.25" track, no one even mentions the noise.
Also, my buddies 2000 XCR800 is much quieter than the RX-1. At anything under WOT the engine is quieter too. The track is always much quieter (he also has a 1.25" track).
Personally I would love to have a sled that is as quiet as a luxury car, while still having major horsepower.

Thanks maddog. I know what you mean about the raspy carb sound after starting up without breather cover to move out of shop. I would like to weigh in on trail closings. Trails up here are closed for many reasons including riding off trail, SPEED,garbage, noise,etc.etc.etc One major closure this year was after the land owner witnesses someone jump her driveway and almost hit her in her car! Regardless of how close he was that major trail will never reopen unless the land is sold! That woman is telling everyone she knows and even strangers how horrible we are period. Not the loud ones or any other particular group..ALL of us! All it took was one person. I have heard some sleds on the trail that sound like Pro mod sleds. There are the offenders that get our curfews etc. in my opinion. Now VT wants to make act 250 Zoning law apply to trails and the exec director of VAST says if they do we are done!
What is act 250 zoning?
Also, where in VT. are you? I spend alot of time there.

Act 250 is a zoning law that creates piles of red tape to build a house etc. Many in the state have fought tooth and nail to no avail. as the extremists are to well orginized. In answer to where I am we are way north about 20 miles south af quebec. The trails are nothing short of AWESOME right now. If it wasnt for getting a tooth pulled this morning I would already be riding. Where in VT do you ride? I think VT should have a TY ride I would be into that. As long as we can use our side of the trail I will ride with anyone!

Boy Maddog I was just thinking for a moment it was you that was in PETA. I was going to take back my TY Idea as we would clash badly.NOLOL All I can see when thinking of them is A person in a cow suit going to our schools and talking garbage mixed with chicks with animal outfits and fake blood "I Think" lying on the ground for shock value. Probably blood of a dairy farmer was used. L.O.L It would be cool to see how badly you can beat me with the ECP. maybe that would make me part with the coin! I am not trying to ruffle feathers I just think extremists Suck.

VTRXRider,
No, that was me that belongs to PETA. I have since I was in college. Its a philosophical viewpoint, just like choice of sled. Nothing more, nothing less. Clashing isn't a bad thing if done with respect and understanding that not everyone thinks the same way we do. I have lots of great friends that hunt, fish, wear leather coats, and slaughter their own live stock. That's their choice, just like its my choice to not. We don't clash, we have intellegent conversations about our beliefs and don't try to convince each other we're right or their wrong. One thing we all agree on here is that snowmobiling is a great sport and Yamaha sleds rule! I'd love to get together and ride with you. Im in Northern VT also. Just because we have differing viewpoints on politics doesn't mean we can't agree that Yamaha sleds rock. I think a Northern VT TY Ride would be a great idea!

This is ridiculous, I responded to a question and now we have 3 pages of negative posts. Look, I like the sound, period. Plus I am old school, when I opened up the air intake with the ECP, I opened up the exhaust. If I get a ticket, that is my problem, but it is not that loud, not near as loud as most two strokes.

Agreed Indy,
Its probably a good time to leave this post alone. Funny how peoples beliefs, mine included, get caught up in totally unrelated topics. I'll save my soapbox comments for a different medium. Thanks for all the constructive comments guys. I WILL be removing some material from my muffler, I WILL respect everyones opinion as to how they like or dislike the sound, and beyond that I consider this thread dead.

I started to write this but was out of time to go get my final wisdom tooth pulled. I am sorry to have came off like I did but it is obvious red2003 is not a extremist and just wanted to agree with everything he said and I also think it would be a great idea for a end of the season ty run. What towns/areas do you ride? My current avatar was taken in granby near the Yellow bucket trail.
I will start a new thread for this and leave the neg back here
