In case any of you have seen my woes regarding keeping the oil from draining out of my '03 RX-1M I had some more info. The previous posts were:

I finally pulled things apart. I checked all of the vents and the airbox....no sign of oil. Pulled off the covers and tipped it up on its side. Started it up and the oil started a flowin'. It looked like it was coming from behind the primary clutch so I ordered up a clutch removal tool. I got the primary off and pulled the crankcase cover. THE OIL SEAL WAS TRASHED. I have not yet replaced it so I am not positive that it will solve my problem; I am pretty sure though.

I am sorry that I was so critical of the four-strokes, it wasn't a design flaw, just a bad part. I sure wish that the dealer would have checked this out in the first place. I figured it out in a matter of minutes and I am by no means a mechanic. 30 minutes of work and a $7 part would have saved me hundreds of dollars and whole lot of heartache.

know what you are goin thu. had lots of trouble with my sled after the dealer serviced it. you did the right thing by finding the problem yourself. these sleds are awsome but the dealers have not been able to keep up with the technology.

Hey RX1Tahoe! Good to hear from you! As you know the rain has been tough on the snow situation here in the Sierra. This latest storm will help. I should have my last gasket delivered this week and will pray for decent snow.

I replaced the oil seal, tipped it on the side, started it up and no leaks. Finally the nightmare is over. The nice part about it is that each time that I poured the oil out of the damaged seal, I would drain the remainder after the fact to see how much was left in the engine - was about 2 qts. Nice to know that it never ran completely dry, though I would shut it down immediately every time.

I do all my own work even if I haven,t worked on them befor, I have found its better to learn to do it yourself than trust a mechanic that doesn,t know what he,s doing.

I learned my lesson. The problem at the time was that it was still under warranty and I figured that I shouldn't have to pay for anything. Even though it should have been covered under warranty Yamaha refused to admit that anything was wrong and the dealer did not have the expertise to diagnose. As a result I am out of pocket a few hundred dollars and have been stuck in the middle of nowhere because of what should have been a 10-minute diagnosis, a 7 dollar part, and a little effort on the part of the Yamaha Techline when dealing with the dealer.

Ths sled was a 2003 holdover, I was thinking that maybe sitting in a warehouse for two years caused the oil seal to fail. Is that a stretch?

I was out on it today, on its side plenty and holding her mud just fine with the new seal.
