Why I bought an RX-1 and What I think now...

Well after 2 seasons and 5000+ miles, I'll write a little that you can tell non-RX owners when they are trying to decide what to buy.

Why I bought an RX-1:
-Reliability. Period.
-Ease of maintenance
-Lack of constant tinkering to keep it in top tune.

What I think now:
Other than a few warranty issues and dealer problems which I won't get into now, maintenance and reliabilty has been exceptional. I changed the oil a few times, changed the plugs once just for good measure, and changed the belt ONCE...at around 4500 miles. Thats after 2 seasons of fairly hard trail running.

All of my friends run 2 strokes, and now that I have a real rear suspension (CAT!) and decent track (what was Yamaha thinking?), I can do more than run with the big dogs...I can send them home with their tails between their legs! My last ride last season, I finally had my suspension and track dialed in, and was able to blow the skis off my friend's '01 MXZ700. In fact, after I blew by him without a problem, while trying to keep his feelings from getting hurt, he had to resort to taking crazy chances to get by me on the trail...and wound up in the bushes! No damage or injuries, but he finally had to admit that he didn't have a prayer against the RX! Now I just need to go up against my buddy with the Cat with the big bore kit...

The key word here : RELIABILITY! :yam:
4000 trouble free miles last year for myself!

120 days before riding again! ;)!

welterracer

I love my warrior.. except for the mods i had to do to get it to ride and handle the way i wanted!! (still doesnt handle as well as a stock viper)

A true great sled is perfect right out of the box..

The motor is to dye for...

reliabiltity is second to none!!

Brian.

When I was looking last year, I was really considering a Ski-doo GSX 800 and then I heard the RX-1 (actually a Warrior) running and I knew I had found the snowmobile for me. The sound of that motor goes through you like hearing a women having the big "O". God I love my RX-1.... :4STroke:

I couldn't agree more. I was ready to order an 800 REV when I heard the RX-1 run at Tip up Town. When that little Jap guy turned the key I pissed my pants

nhrxrider.... is there any weight savings with the cat skid ? which skid did you use? I would of course keep three wheels in the back with the 15" track but am considering lite skids as a mod for my warrior.
Thanks for any in-put you may have.

I forgot to mention...on some brutally cold mornings, my 2-stroke buddies have to pull their arms off trying to start their sleds. Even the electric start versions have a very difficult time. My RX cranks a few seconds and starts right up. Love it.

The Cat skid is the best thing I did. I got rid of the buckboard ride and weak stock parts, and got a velvet-smooth ride, MUCH better hookup, and it feels much lighter. I don't know if it is or not...I didn't weight it. If I was concerned about weight, I wouldn't own an RX...the cat skid was better, so it went in. It sure feels MUCH more agile. I can toss it through the rough stuff, I dare to jump it now, and it just plain carves better overall.

And , this motor pull really strong all the time. At any speed this thing pull like a freigth train (but with the weight too :D ).

Think of a Rx-1 that weight the same of a cat 900, they would be dead even. :4STroke: This sled is torquing all the way up to 9000 rpm.

5000 KM trouble free except for a Exhaust header that come loose. Warranty repair. And 15 $ can of oil for the season.

My 03 rode like hell, but had a great engine. Started at -50 with out a problem (amsoil). My 04 rev600sdi rode great, but the engine sucked in comparison and reliability was worse. I am relying on Yamy with the 05 to have the ride and handling figured out. This could be an awsome sled!!!!!

I guess system by system, I would have to say:

Engine: Top notch!once/if we get the oil issue figured out, there shouldn't be any problems here. Great power, smooth as hell, and very efficient for a performance engine...but we all know that.

Suspension: Front isn't bad...in fact, I'd say good to very good. I know some of the ski lift has been blamed on the front suspension, but once I changed the rear skid to a Cat, I have NO more ski lift. Maybe the '05 will fix this. Rear: Junk. Difficult to get the adjustments right, and only fair once they are set. very weak parts for agressive riders. Junk track as we all know.

Chassis: EXCELLENT!!! After a hard crash that would have had any other sled totalled, I jumped back on mine and finished the day. After many accurate measurements were taken, there was NO bending or twisting of the tunnel anywhere. Not bad for a 90mph endo. I did bend the left A arms and spindle, but it still rides and handles fine.

Seat: Junk so far. Original started coming apart soon after I bought the sled. After a warranty replacement, we'll see how it holds up. I only have a couple rides on the new seat, and it is spending the summer in indoor storage. We'll see what cold weather does to it this year.

Ergonomics: Excellent. At 6'4", I like the stretched out riding position. I need all the room I can get. Once I put the 2" bar risers on the comfort level went from very good to great for long rides.

Fit & finish: Could be a little better, but not bad for a first year sled. Definately better than most of the other guys offer, but for a vehicle aproaching $10,000, I would expect better. I had several screws that had stripped threads from the factory, the side panel's upper rear rubber/plastic attachment points came apart a week after buying the sled, and they wouldn't stay together after that. The brake light had a defective switch from the factory, and it took almost a year to get it fixed. Reverse plastic handle broke off in very cold weather.

Dealer experience: Terrible. Dealing with 2 different dealers, one refused to even look at the sled, the other dragged out the repairs forever and refused to even do some of them. Had to beg and threaten just to get done what I did. Refused to acknowledge the track lug tearing problem, and a few other issues.

Overall impression: One kick #*$&@ sled, awesome looks and performance, and it just needed some upgrading to get to perfection. I can jump on it and head out for a weekend ride without any hesitation about reliability. No tuning issues at all...just keep the oil fresh and ride it. Always starts, period. Come winter grease it up, change the oil, and hit the trails.

Bought mine for reliability. After some shock settings and longtracking it, I'm even more impressed.

Fit and finish very nice.

Great trail riding machine.

And yes, reliability was also the biggest factor. Got sick and tired of having my Cat's dragged back to my vehicle via tow strap three years in a row.

I hear ya there! I'm also a converted Cat rider. I still have my old ZRT800, but if/when I get time its going to be rebuilt for my stepson. Hopefully for him the performance will outweigh the reliability issues. Considering I owned the Cat for several winters and only put maybe 2000 miles on max, and 700 of those was on one trip...and the first winter I owned my RX I put around 2500+ miles on...I did the right thing.
