it goes in between the reverse gears, the smaller gears that touch the big bottom one. if you pull those two smaller gears apart you will see a small hole that it sits in. not sure what its for but i noticed it when it fell out of mine during track swap. part 59 in the picture.

No, its not one of the springs between the reverse gears. Way too big.

Looks like an exhaust valve spring from a an old 2 smoke or check your "reverse handle rod" there's a similar dampening spring on that.
Did a buddy throw this spring into your bolt bin to have some fun with you?
