I'm sure this has been discussed dozens of times, but humour me.

The ball joints on my 09 XTX are completely worn out. There's a lot of slop up and down, and the steering has become very stiff.

What will need to be replaced? Will I need to replace the lower a-arms? Do they come with the ball joints?

On a related note, will '08 a-arms bolt on to an '09? A friend has an '08 MTX that he put an after market front end on. Would I be able to bolt the a-arms and spindles on to my sub-frame?

If the lower joints have got to the point where they have worn your arms (like my left side was) then you'll need arms. If they are just worn out you will be able to replace the joints. Easy way to check arms, remove the arm, remove the snap ring holding the joint in. If the joint falls out the arm is toast. If it fits snug, you're fine.

Yes new arms come with joints but they are over $300 per side. At near $700 you could buy an aftermarket front end yourself.

I think the 08 arms will bolt on however 08 arms have different geometry as well as the MTX arms will be shorter than your xtx arms.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure they're going to be completely worn out, as they already move around prefft freely when the weight is taken off the skis.

I'm aware the MTX is narrower, and the geometry on the 08's was different anyway, but if they'll bolt on it would be a much cheaper option to go with than buying a-arms for what is now just a spare sled.

I priced out the bottom a-arm a few years ago, and it was actually over $400, so I'd much prefer not to buy two of them.

Ah, I didn't look for the Cat in the signature. If you do put the 08 arms on, I'm sure you know, you'll have to change the upper arms as well. I believe the mounting positions are the same but not 100% sure. You might get away with just joints in your 09 arms so it might be worth checking out.

A machine shop can build up the bore, cheaper then a new arm. Or get creative with other products out there.

I just spoke to my buddy with the MTX arms, and he's going to send me the works of it. So long as it bolts to the subframe, I'm golden.
