Hi

Just picked up an APEX XTX, and I am thinking of adding the Yamaha gas caddy from a Nytro to it. I was wondering if anyone had install them on an APEX LTX and if there were any issues.

Maybe an issue with the exhaust. Nytro has the single and is turned out. I guess with turn outs for exhaust it would work. Not sure though. :yam:

When you say gas caddy are you referring to the tunnel mount or the saddle bag style? The one on top of the tunnel may work but it would be trial and error. FYI you would need to order the rack, gas can and come up with a possible heat sheild for the exhaust.

The Yamaha gas caddy are like saddlebags from what I see in the catalog.

I haven't seen any pictures of the frame that supposedly comes with them and how it mounts to the sides of the tunnel.

Just wondering If I can make it work on the APEX.

Well I had a set of those for a short time and can tell you the brackets wont work on the apex because there shaped like the nytro tunnel. I didnt likehow far they stuck out on the sled. The top of the fx tunnel is beveled at the top and not boxed like the apex.

I was concerned about range with the 2011 tank being smaller due to EPS. My wife runs a Viper and can hold 12 gallons. When I drove a Vector our range matched well. Here is my solution. The tanks and mount are from RotoPax. All this is bolt on with no modifications to the sled. The black angle stock I custom fabricated. Each tank holds 1 gallon.

Hi NH_Sledder,

Would it be possible for you to post a picture with the tanks off, so we can see how your bracket attachs.

Thanks,
KC

I'll try to get another photo posted this weekend. In the mean time, you can look at the mount on the RotoPax site. I did not make any modifications to it.

Look for the Polaris RZR plate + pack mount.
I did put a piece of black irrigation pipe over the rear grab bar to increase its diameter to better fit the RZR plate and to protect the bar from scratches.

Take that off NOW trust me. First hard muggle or bump and that's gone!!!! Do you have any idea how much the rear compresses? I have a nytro XTX and the rear off the track will often hit the tunnel protectors

Remember what I said first bump

Thanks for your concern. I've tried to take into consideration all the things that could go wrong and I will be the guinea pig. I don't recommend anyone try this until I can post test results. There's nothing under the tunnel to catch even under full compression. If the framework comes into contact with anything it will be the ground (snow). I'll take a measurment how high this setup is off the ground and let you guys know. Then we can all take bets if it will work.

Yes, I agree. I'm hoping that I inspire Yamaha or someone in the aftermarket to give us a pre-engineered solution.

If those cans are actually two stacked, it seems a good place to put them may be at the very back of the foot board. Similar to the location that the Yamaha Nytro tanks mount. It seems a simply bracket could be made and then no worries about them slamming the ground. With the amount of complaining about storage racks not working on the old Apex I'm surprised that when they redesigned the muffler they didn't take that into account....wait, no...never mind, I'm not surprised at all.

RotoPax does make a right angle bracket that may work in that location. It would require some drilling into the sled (which I really didn't want to do). Also, I wanted to be able to refuel the tanks without removing them. Not knowing how hot the back of the sled gets in that area (due to the exhaust) this could be a safety issue. My current setup can easily be removed if it doesn't work out. If it does, I may make some refinements so that it is a little easier on the eyes.

Here are the additional pics that were asked for. The lowest point of the fuel mount is ~17 inches off the ground. The sled has 14.5" of travel so I am going to test it as is. I can get another 2 inches of clearance if I remove the reflector and shorten the mount.
