A couple of the pre drilled holes in the Yamaha Ultra Plate line up where some existing pan rivets are. How did you guys get around this? Make new holes or drill through the rivets?

Anyone have pictures of whats behind the belly pan? Probably not but I would love to see whats behind there so I can choose my drill spots wisely.

thanks
;)!

youre lucky. Mine came with a drill hole where someone started to install one and gave up.

ultra plate install

Did you get instructions with it? I got one last year and a buddy helped me put it on. I was more of the assistant, so my memory isn't that great. I think we had to drill out some rivets. As long as your plate was designed for your model of sled, you should be fine if you drill right where the holes in the plate are.

yeah I have the instructions. I thought they would place the pre drilled holes around things like rivets. Its not a big deal, I can drill them out, I just wanted to see what others did.

Its almost a good thing that you have to drill the rivets out because you know that if there was a rivet there, there is nothing major behind it that you shouldnt drill into.

Drill out the rivets to instal the rivnuts. I used a socket over the drill bit to ensure I didn't go to deep into anything.

good call on the socket. That will work way better than the old masking tape around the bit.

thanks

You could always do a search but that would take forever.
Besides I like to type. This way I can hear myself talk to myself.

If you line the plate up on the bottom of your sled you will see the 4 rivits you will need to drill out. Mark them with a sharpie if your memorie is short like mine.

Drill the rivits out first then step the bit size up to your final size. You need a 10mm drill bit for the final whole. ORRRRRR, most people can not find 10mm drill bits so find a 25/64th drill bit. Most hardware stores should have them. Lowes stocks them.

The instructions say do not drill deeper than 20mm so use a drill stop. The socket trick will work also.

Also remove the 2 screws that are in the front of the sled under the bumper.

You will need 4 6mm rivnuts. and the tool to set them. The Yamaha install kit comes with all the hardware you need. I think they sell for $29 if you do not have one. Or did not come with the plate.

Here is a good site for Rivnuts if you need them:
http://www.mcmaster.com/param/html/rive ... efault.htm

You are looking for the open ended Knurled rivnut OR as McMaster calls them Rivit Nuts

McMaster Carr # 94020a383 Solld in packs of 25 for $12.74
The Tool I got from the tool truck:
http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/toolc ... e=1&#32145

Granted Napa sells the same tool for less but I like it when my tools come to ME :)

So if you are not going to be putting rivnuts in lots of places the Yamaha kit is the way to go
The kit is available from Port Yamaha:
Replacement Mount Kit - fits all RX and RS
SMA-8FA34-MT-KT

They have kits for all the other models.

Hope this helps

Whenever you drill on the sled, consider what may be behind the obvious. We have one user, who has a hole in the gas tank cause of a little over-exuberance with the drill. :-)
