Went to the local dealer the other day and asked for the Yamalube 4 stroke oil for snowmobiles. I was sent home with the 5W-30 cold weather oil. I don't think they even knew about the 0W-30 blend (and in fact I didn't either until getting home and doing a little research here).
The 5-30 should be okay to use, right? I figure I can use it the rest of the season and then change again next fall to the 0-30 formula.
What do you think? Use it or return it and go somewhere else for the 0-30 oil?
This is for a new Vector.

I think Yamaha switched after the 04 sleds to 0w-30 in 05 and I believe it was mainly to help starting in extreme cold. But I could be wrong.

My dealer seels the 5w-30 and I've not had any issues. But, I live along the coast and rarely see temps below zero.

Put it in the freezer overnite and then try to pour it out, that should answer your question.

Thats what originaly was used in rx1 when they came out, then they came out with 0-30 weight, if its not super cold u can use the 5-30. thats what I run in all my 4 stroke atvs

0W-30 pours much better than 5W-30 when left in the freezer? I could put it in the freezer but all I want to know is if it is okay to run in my sled!

The answer is YES, you can put in just about any kind of oil you like and it will be fine.

Cool. I will save about $5 in fuel by not returning it!

Yes, Yamaha changed the viscosity for better cold weather flow. Next year go to an even better oil and weight with amsoil 0W-40

Mighty - is there any concern with the starter clutch an using normal "car" synthetic oil?

I was told by 2 Yamaha dealers to use the 5w-30 for th first 2000 miles or at least for the first season. Then switch to the semi-synthetic 0w-30 thereafter. Same advice I've heard for years - break in on standard oil before switching to synthetic. Is that really necessary? Your call.

Like LB said; no. Plus their 0W-40 isn't car oil.Metallicat said:Mighty - is there any concern with the starter clutch an using normal "car" synthetic oil?

Nice! I'll run the 5-30 for the rest of the year then probably switch to the Amsoil 0-40 next year!
Thanks for the update!
