    Viking 2013

Just put a deposit down for our sled dog club on a new 2012 VK. We ordered it with an additional radiator kit, tall windshield, rear work light, rear cargo box. Very excited to give this new toy a try in the fall. The club decided to get the VK over the SWT 600 (We also have a SWT 800). We use...

    Also what not to do.

the ditch is created by the sled dog teams going through this section. it is a steep downhill and the mushers ride the brakes, which are basically steel claws that dig into the snow. the result is the ditch, after about 20 or so teams go through. the competitive mushers try to get through this...

    Also what not to do.

This was on the Iditarod Trail between Finger Lake and Rainy Pass, on the Happy River Steps. Dug this out in 2 hrs.

    Wiring rear work light/lights

I have 2, 12 volt "tractor" lights, and would like to use them as rear work lights on my VK Pro. I was wondering if anyone had ideas as to where to wire them into. The wiring harness for the rear seat handwarmers looks convenient. Thanks in advance.

    First ride on Viking

That's a beauty of a machine. I was the musher who parked next to you guys. I took one team out on a sled, and crashed, so I went home to get my machine and ran the second 16-dog team off the front of the VK!!

Spark Plug Change in VK Pro...or...Yamaha's cruel joke

one thing about changing the plugs that wasn't posted here, is that you have to disconnect the wires running to each coil first. then pry the whole coil out very carefully. the plugs reside deep down in the cylinder head. fun fun fun. good thing it went 2500 miles without having to change them!

Spark Plug Change in VK Pro...or...Yamaha's cruel joke

I couldn't find anything here using the search. Trying to change the plugs, got the radiator out of the way, kind of, and can see the plug wires with the funky tops. Any ideas for how to get the plugs out? Thanks in advance.

    Unhappy Viking owner

I would be very interested in hearing about plow mounts on the front of a VK. We get so much snow here, that sometimes it is easier to plow it off the dog trail than to render it several times and then pack it down. Also if anyone has pros/cons about a plow on a tracked atv.

Grooming in Vermont with 08 VK Pro

that makes a lot of sense. my 07 came back from service with the upgraded tranny parts, but the "tech" adjusted the idle so high, it didn't shift. once i reduced the idle it shifted fine. the "tech" also left a long screwdriver/crowbar thing in the undercarriage, that vibrated out when I took it...

The next Yamaha Widetrack? 80FI-based pull-ease!

I agree, but look at the images in the photo gallery on their website. There isn't one image of the VK pulling anything. It's indicative of their marketing aim. They must sell a lot of these as touring machines. As pure utility machines... not so much. Another thing to ponder is why isn't...

The next Yamaha Widetrack? 80FI-based pull-ease!

Air19, did you get the upgraded kit for the tranny? My dealer here put one in for free, and it shifts a lot better, although not perfect. I have an '07.

The next Yamaha Widetrack? 80FI-based pull-ease!

I've been using the VK Pro for one year now to groom sled dog trails in Alaska. I also have a SWT 500F. For my use, and I believe most utility situations, a 24" track would make this the nirvana (should that be capitalized?) of Utility sleds. I guess Yammie has to still hedge their market a bit...

    parking brake adjustment?

haven't been down to the Susitna yet this year. I use the machine to train my sled dogs with, and have been using the Willow side of Hatcher Pass rd. Lots of snow up here.

    parking brake adjustment?

My parking brake is not engaging. It seems to be pulling cable, and when I check the disc, the pads seem to tighten a little, but not enough. Any idea how to adjust this to get more pressure on the disc? thanks.

Grooming in Alaska with the Diesel

Air19, that is a good idea, but I don't think it would throw snow over the banks like this home made contraption that I built. Not that it works real well either. Here is a photo of the trail I'm grooming. It was taken when we had very little snow, now we have about 6' on the ground in...

Grooming in Alaska with the Diesel

Air19, I'm just trying to achieve the hardest base possible in the least amount of time. We have so much snow it takes a day or two to get the surface back to its firmest after a bunch of snow. I think I'm looking for a firmer trail than for x-c skiing, and definitely firmer than a...
