This was on the Iditarod Trail between Finger Lake and Rainy Pass, on the Happy River Steps. Dug this out in 2 hrs.

the ditch is created by the sled dog teams going through this section. it is a steep downhill and the mushers ride the brakes, which are basically steel claws that dig into the snow. the result is the ditch, after about 20 or so teams go through. the competitive mushers try to get through this section in the front of the pack so they have a better trail.

I thought about that and said to myself, naw can't be from dogsleds. Not the first time I was wrong today.

Greg,

Took some Buffalo hunters from Shell to Skwentna this weekend. Said Steps arfe in great shape now. But I will say, the ride out to the Landing on Sunday was a challenge. River was getting real soft. Felt myself trenching a lot on the Viking. Done for the year.
