03 jackshaft bearing question

i see alot of posts fixin these things,was doin some reading that they are the same bearing that the update is, why is the old one failing?what is the update doing for fixing the problem,i am a little nervous about mine now but still seems ok, i am going to pull the seal and clean and repack it but like i said was wondering on the failing problem, is it a bad bearing?whats the locking collar do?

it wasent the bearing that was the problem but the collar that held the jackshaft. the 04 had a better set up with a threaded sleeve and locking nut. that said, repack the bearing and keep an eye on the collar. you can update the collar and replace the bearing in the off season, as you should get at least 5000 miles out of the origional.

man i repacked that bearing tonight, cleaned it really good with brake clean, very rusty coluored grease in it,i think i should replace it, is there anyway of getting that bearting out of there without pullin the case?anyone try a slide hammer or somethin, i take it those wedges come out towards the clutch, then the c clip comes out,then the bearing,anyone try heatin the aluminum to see how that bearing comes out?

oh and thanks grader,so the 04 bearing will last the same ampount of time, and the 03 setup is those collors coming out? how do you keep them from doing that?i know of alot of 03 rx1 around here and no problems that way, but one took out the bearing

had a few bearing failures in my area & one guy took out both clutches when it went. I replaced the bearing in my turbo just because.

what bearing did you use? dhit like this yamy should cover, this thing has 2700 miles on it and already replacin a jackshaft bearing,sure glad i put in that new mono skid, the old skid had alot of bushings worn to, cant wait till next yaer to see all the worn parts, did you get good snow up there turk, il be up saturday if yoou do lol

the only way to stop the coller from comeing out is to change the coller with and 04-05 coller. p.s change the bearing at the same time

O.K., I know this has been beat to death...but I did a search and only came up with about a million threads...exactly what parts are required to update this? I already changed the bearing (2 seasons ago...when sled was 1 year old...had 3 bad bearings, 1 on each end of jackshaft, and 1 on the drive shaft). So all I need is the collar setup to update.

By the way, when replacing the bearings...cross ref. them. You can save some BIG $$$ on them. Yammy wanted like $70 for one of them...I got it at a bearing supplier for around $15 for the same bearing. Plus the Yammy one was expected to take a couple weeks to get here...the bearing place had one in stock.

jus ask your dealer for the coller ,nut and the two washers off of the o4-05 rx 1. or go to the on line fish and look the numbers up and take them to your dealer thats what i do saves lots of time

Thanks for the parts info. Now I have the same question as RXWhopper. I had my jackshaft out when I did the bearings...does he have to pull the shaft again? I really can't remember which way the bearing went in. I think for my sled, all i have to do is pull the secondary and the wedges, and install the new collar.

Hey NHRXrider, I see you are from Milan NH, I was up that way a while ago, did a job at the Pontook HI yard. Stopped in at the country store for directions, helpfull people.
Anyways, to answer your question, No, you must pull the shaft whereas the updated parts contain a lock ring which goes on the motor side of the bearing, all other components go on the secondary side of the bearing.
Search through a couple of pages on this site and you will find a great post containing directions and a pic of both the 03 and the 04 and later update.

ok here is a strange one, a dealer in sk. are telling peaple to put a bearing on, like the old 2 stroke sled designs with the colar and allen head screws on the colar, they got rid of the wedges, does this make sense?

speaking of bearings...seems like I am endlessly buying them if I put good miles on in a season. Anyone use an online supplier and what brand are you guys using. Seems like the Yami bearings don't last. 1000 miles and my idlers are usually shot. I know NTN has a special cold weather series made just for sleds (called formula) and was wondering if any of you guys are running these and where is the best price on them? I would rather spend a few bucks more if I know they will live a little longer.
