I was reading in the classified that some were looking for new coils and a warranty topic came up. I have an '03 RX-1 with 7200 miles on it. When I changed my plugs this year it seemed like the coils did not go onto the plugs as firm as they should and the threads on the plugs were worn down in spots possibly from an arcing condition. I am gathering that they have changed them on the newer sleds. Do they have to be arcing to the head in order for Yamaha to replace them or what is the problem that will make Yamaha replace them? Any info greatly appreciated

I will give them a call. Hopefully they won't give me any hassle. They shouldn't especially since I have an extended warranty.
Thanks for the info Lippy.

So I called Yamaha today and they say they are not aware of any such issue and that I will have to take the sled to the dealership and let them look at it. How did you guys get yours replaced?

So do they replace them with the exact same coils or do they have an updated one. Do they only fix one of yours at a time or have they replaced all four.

Just to let anyone who is following this thread I took the boots off my sled this evening and started it. With the lights on in the garage it was no issue to see that all 4 were arcing to the cyclinder head. I have 7,200 miles on my sled. I don't know if this failure is due to time or mileage or both but if you have an '03 be sure to check yours out.
Thanks agian to all that have replied to this thread.

Add one more to the list that Yamaha has taken care of on coils! The service rep told my dealer no so I called Yamaha myself. In the end (without much graveling even) he caved in and said he'd pay for all four coils.

ok, another noob question...
What happens if it is arching? meaning what does that do to your sled? eat through spark plugs? power loss?

Just to let you guys know they replaced all 4 of my coils. They checked the resistance and they were out of spec and arcing as well. They were covered under my Y.E.S. Sled is running much better and also getting better fuel mileage. So my advice to everyone with an '03 is to check them out and get em replaced.
