Ignition coils...?
They were a problem in many 03-04 RX-1's and the 05 coils are updated and directly compatible. The coil is the part on the end of the spark plug cable that plugs onto the top of the spark plug.

Do you have the throttle free-play adjusted correctly? If there is not enough throttle free-play, you will get a TORS signal. Look up Throttle Cable Adjustment in your Owner's Manual.

are the coils expensive, and are they hard to change, and you say i should buy the 05 coils

The coils can be tested. They are expensive. But, there are a lot of other more likely potential causes of your problem to check and tests to do before you consider buying new coils.
First is to check your Throttle Free-play. Once you indicate to us that it is per the above instructions, then we can move on to more detail for the next check.
Second is to remove and clean your Carbs. You say you checked them. Does that mean you disassembled them and cleaned them internally? I have a tip sheet and procedure for this. I'll send that once you indicate that the throttle freeplay is correctly adjusted and you still have the problem.
Third, I would look at cleaning and testing the coils, which is a simple resistance check on the Primary and Secondary circuits in the coils. To clean them you remove the coils, remove the rubber tip and rubber grommet and clean them with brakeclean to remove any carbon tracking. Then clean out the rubber parts. Inspect the connectors that mates with the sparkplug. Make sure they fit tightly and are not damaged due to arcing. Reinstall the rubber coil tips and install the coils w/o the rubber grommets. Start sled, look for arcing around the coil, in a darkened room. If NO arcing, then you should do the coil resistance checks. If we get that far, I'll send you the specs. If the coils test good you saved several hundred dollars.
There is a lot of cleaning and inspecting you need to do before you can definitely say new coils will solve your problem.

I would definitely suspect TORS/cable adjustment with these symptoms.
But also regarding the coils... do not overlook the SPARK PLUGS!!!
Now it is very clear (since you asked how hard it is to get the coils off), that you have never changed the plugs. What I notice with the plugs on 03 is this; the point where the coil contacts the plug lead wears down fairly quickly on the plug itself, this can lead to poor conduction and arcing from the coil to the plug (as well as arcing from coil to rocker cover). Remove the plugs and inspect their leads -- if they are worn, replace. Plugs are cheap, something like $2 each.
And about removing the coils... easiest thing in the world to do... the coils are stick type, the low voltage wire clips onto the top, so unclip it and then just yank the coil out.

Please see the attached Coil Testing and Cleaning Tips. I do not see anything in there about heat resistive paints and high temps grease. I also do not recall anyone claiming that these methods actually worked, for any extended period of time, either.
