when I put my Grizzly in 4 wheel drive it makes a clang sound, not really loud but sounds almost like if your winch hook is out to far and it is banging on the casing or bumper......so when I went to run the bike onto the truck I stopped it half way up the ramps to take a look....I reached in behind the front tire and followed the drive shaft to the front axle wear it connects.....when I put my hands on the boot and hold tight I can turn the axle around and it makes the clang sound...when I move my hand down the shaft about ( can;t believe I said shaft..lol) 6 inches to the other boot I can not turn that end.......so whats up, did I strip the one end??...bigger question is how expensive is the fix..lol.....hope I explained it well enough for some input...Thanks Diceman

sunds like you nees a new shaft and slip yoke. uncles 92 did the same and that cured it. his wore out the splines on the shaft and in the slip yoke.

well the axle end inside front boot was pooched and luckily I tracked down a used one...everyplace I called said they get atleast 5 calls a week looking for a used drive shaft....after the last year or so I am starting to really question Yamahas ongoing dependabilty...many issues..Diceman

well just toasted the used axle on my 04 Grizzly that I bought and put in in June of this year....Yamaha wants a fortune for a new one so was wondering if anyone knows of another place to buy a aftermarket one that is more reasonably priced ?....guys have told me that buying used or new has the same strength but after blowing this used one I am not sure?...also any used places that ship would be great too...Cheers Diceman

royal distributing has them in their catolouge and the will ship phone orders. always ebay as well.

I checked...Royal does not carry the drive shaft...they carry left and right axles but not the drive shaft...Diceman

well in this post you said axle. only place i could think of is bent toys in redbridge on for another used one. never had any sucess finding a drive shaft for one of these aftermarket. new for uncles 92 bigbear was only $300.00 ish when i did it 3 years ago from yamaha. go online and price it at sudburycycle and marine. they have online ordering and pricing. always give me a good deal on parts.

will do...local dealere here has it listed for $569.00...yikes it is called drive shaft 2........kimpex has a replacement part but they are out of stock until Nov..think I am done with a used part for this, been there, done that, doesn't last...Cheers Diceman

found a place in the States to order drive shat 2 at a much cheaper cost......however on the Yamaha parts website , I looked for the cuplings to order.....it is part number 5KM-67839-00-00 for 2 cuplings I think,,,,,are these the two that each end of the spline goes into?..one on the engine side and one on the diff side?..just want to make sure I order the right parts?...also is there a seal that covers the splines at each end to order ?..Thanks Diceman

well it looks like there is 1 seal and one o-ring on the parts fiche when i look at it. there is also 5KM-22358-00-00 to seal the coupling to the shaft on each end of it.

thanks...well ordered all the parts from the States, much cheaper.....so hopefully they will be in soon.....is there a special grease you use for the splines and couplings when you put it together?...hear you need to to put in as much grease as possible?..Cheers

i would use white lithium myself when i would put it together. a bit on the seal lips will help the seals stay good longer as they will not run dry.
