what are the symptoms

last weekend was in some mud and later as I was going slow on a trail it overheated....got home and took off front rack and panel and cleaned the rad really well , front and back........yesterday went out, drove about 4 miles down a dirt road and then went about 1/2 mile on a trail,,,,,not a lot of mud but some....when I stopped I turned the kill switch off so the fan could keep running...when I turned the kill switch off the fan did not come on right away but maybe 5 seconds later the fan kicked in plus the temp light came on....light stayed on for about 4 to 5 minutes.....I then turned around and went back towards my truck...went about 4 miles and the temp light did not come on...once I got back onto a trail and then stopped it came on again....So I then just packed it in for the day.......I will check the rad again of course but if it just got plugged from me doing that little drive then I can only drive it on pavement because I barely went in anything nasty......so what ya think??

Make sure you can see through the radiator. The fins are paper thin and easily bent. never use a pressure washer to clean a radiator. I've had to pull my radiator and straighten the fins due to mud and trail junk. Its not much fun and is time consuming.

rad is really clean......???

well this morning I spent a couple hours really cleaning the rad....so took off and spent a few hours bombing around....when I would stop I would hit the kill switch so the fan would run and the fan did run for a minute or 2 then shut off....so no worries until I was in some muck, going really slow through an area when I noticed the temp light was on....I hit the kill switch off but the fan was not running and did not start running for about 5 seconds ..then it kicked in and ran a few minutes and then when it finally shut off the temp light stayed on for maybe 30 seconds then turned off....I then rode another 20 minutes with no problems.........could the senser in the fan be screwed?...can they get full of crap?/I am correct that if the temp light is on that fan should be running?.. when I got back to the truck to load up I hit the kill switch and the fan was running.......Thanks again guys but what should I do ya think??

wow, things are dead on here...lol..does anyone go on this site anymore..lol

The fan sensor is set to come on at a lower temp then the overtemp sensor. I'd check the fan sensor and wires. You can check the sensor by putting it in water and raising the temp until it activates.

You could also bypass it so the fan runs constant to see if it will still overheat. I wouldn't leave it that way but it would help diagnose if you have a fan/sensor problem.
