Correct, if you have play in your spring when the suspension is at full droop, you'll risk losing the bottom spring perch, which would be messy when you land..
I did have play in mine, but I made modifications to my shocks to keep the spring perch from coming loose. I had them rebuilt at Pioneer and had shim packs put in to shorten their travel.
I have EvolX's on it now, but your sled will handle better on groomed twisty trails with the arms level.

Hmmmm.
I'll have to drop it further. I added a bit of pre-load on a trip recently, to attempt to get more "bite" in the corners. If this thing had been my car, or dirt bike, with this inability to "turn in" I'd have cashed in my chips LONG before I got this sled!
 
With the suspension hanging adjust the springs down to one full turn of preload. In most cases this will not get the A-arms level but it will be close. Talking with a local shock rebuilder he said that he has cut down the shock shaft by 3/4" to get the arms at true level.
Adding preload does not add "bite" to the front end as one would expect. I have found that it actually reverses it. The more preload the less the front can dive down allowing the weight to shift from the skid to the skis causing you to "push" thru the corner and makes for a rougher ride.
I would address the "bite " issue with the skis and carbides first. This would be the same way you would address the traction of your car or dirt bike. Could you imagine hammering around the dirt track or a field with street tires mounted on your dirt bike? No matter how stiff you set your suspension those tires just won't grab.
