Hi,

I have an 08 nytro with a leaking chaincase. I traced the leak to where the driveshaft goes into the lower part of the case. There must be a seal in there that is leaking? Would an overfilled case cause that to leak? Or is the seal shot? So, I think I have to replace that, and thats only doable by removing the whole track.

Another question, I saw the how to on how to remove the whole skid. But I hear it can be very difficult to install it back into the tunnel. People have used ratchet straps to compress the suspension before it even comes out. That way when you install it back into the tunnel, you can line the bolt holes up with out fighting it. Where do you attach the ratchets? Any other tips or tricks for skid remove and install would be great.

Thanks!

The previous owner before me had it overfilled. So I started to take some out. It almost stopped leaking entirely when it was filled to the proper level. Is that normal, or is there still a problem?

I would pull the case and replace all seals and check the bearings. You dont have to pull the skid, just the break pads, rotor, 7 or 8 bolts that hold the cover on, a 32mm nut on the top shaft, a 14mm bolt on the lower shaft and pull the gears then the back of the cover. Take pics of how things came off to help with reinstall. Should take about a hour to do it.

Thanks for the link. I have been looking at that for about 2 days now. So you are saying the skid can remain bolted in? Does the drive shaft need to be dropped out or does it remain in place? I just need to replace the seals in there and like you said check the bearing. Is the bearing press fit onto the shaft? or does it come off freely. I am sure I will find out quickly once I do this project this weekend. Thanks.
