Ok I got 30 miles on my sled this year. Yea this winter sucks. I'm in the UP now and was pulling my shanty on the lake and I started smelling burnt rubber. This is after about .5 miles. I stopped and my track clips and Hyfax are burnt up. I tried to limp it back to shore but rubber cooled and froze up. Why would this happen?? Track is centered up and I checked my track tension the week before. Checked chain case oil an it looks ok.

Hyfax and track clips burnt up... im guessing the lake didnt have any snow on it, therefore there wasnt any way to lube or cool the slides. I did that this fall at the grass drags. I peeled the track clips off the slides, and away i went!!

Man, there was a little snow and it was a little slushy out. I dunno. I noticed right when I started out when I let off throttle the sled slowed down way more than normal.

Huh... was the slush and snow deeper than the lugs? Even if it wasn't, the slush should of splashed up to the slides when the lugs hit the ground... how do those white plastic slide things on the top of the front arm look? I dont know if those would chew up the track clips if they are missing. Some people on here are having problems with them. I am not having problems with them, cause i forget to look at them! So they have to be in great shape right?!?!

I locked up my track to the hi-fax this past weekend twice. It was warm and the snow was minimal and the snow was good for making snow/ice balls (very packable). This is the type of snow that burns up the hi-fax... My other friend with another nytro had no problems what so ever. I talked with him about it and the only difference between our sleds was he had the excel 8 wheel kit. So I was jealous and ticked off that he could ride and I couldn't. I ordered the wheels and they are on the way. This year really sucks for snow. I have over 6,500 miles on the machine and never had a problem like this. These wheels are supposed to be just a bit bigger to help keep the track from putting to much pressure on the hi-fax.

To make my problem worse my center two boogie wheels are all chewed up for no good reason and really aren't doing thing. It was time to order new wheels. My skidoo and polaris never had any problems like this. Another $305 bucks to fix Yamaha's shortcomings... Nice...

When I pulled skid out earlier this year I noticed they were worn. But not terrible. I just talked to another guy and he said he runs his track on the loose side. I did last year and ran 2100 miles. This year I tightend just a little tighter then spec. Last year the track would ratchet bad when i hammered down all the way. I'm thinking now it may have been too tight.

Let's not forget that you were towing an ice shack. That puts extra pressure on the drive system and track. The burning rubber you smelled was likely your drive belt burning in the clutch sheaves. How heavy was that ice shack.

Did you install new sliders during the off season? New ones should be cured by some high speed running, heating up the sliders and then stopping and cooling them down with snow. Do this a few times to harden them.

On top of track tension, perhaps there might be some issue within the suspension binding when you reinstalled it, thus causing extra friction.
