Hello all,
Just got ahold of an '08, and it's got quit a bit of up and down play on both sides....doesn't seem like any side to side.
It looks like the 08's ball joint housing is integrated into the a-arm, and in '10 they went to a 2-piece ball joint.
Well, can I get away with just buying new ball joints? or do I need new a-arms? Or will the '10 ball joint fit in the '08?
I don't want to shell out the $160 if it's going to be a waste.
Maybe someone has been in this situation before?
Thanks

I just had my lower controls arms out on my 08 and they are not part of the control arm but are heald in by snap rings on the bottom, I am not sure of the acceptable play but I would say too much would contribute to
darting in the front end as well as clunking and accelerated wear there and else where.

08 nytro ORIGINAL ball joints have a recall for excessive play until 2016. You might be able to get the dealer to replace them for free under the recall. They are easy to press in and out yourself if you need to.

I would try and have a dealer replace them. I bought my 08 before last season and had the same issue, after talking with the dealer up-north (3 hours away from me) they told me it did hit on the TSB but since the bulletin was pulled down, they had it saved and it reads "regardless of warranty status replace ball joints" I tried to have 3 dealers close to me change the ball joints and they kept saying Yamaha warranty was denying the claim so they wouldn't work on the sled (for warranty). Bit the bullet and drove the sled up to the original dealer and they had them done in a week for me. I was in picking other sleds up from storage and they told me to take mine too even though it was denied twice by Yamaha from them. I have not talked to the service manager asking if they ever got paid but he said he was happy to do it.
So in short (sorry to ramble), find a good dealer and they should do them under warranty and that will buy you time if you want to change A-Arms or alter the stock ones down the road. I know someone makes a 3 piece joint that you send the stock one in and they alter it, cant remember who but I know I saw a few posts about it here when I was looking last year. And I do know they have a snap ring in them at the bottom and are pressed in.

If dealer won't do it, try these aftermarket ones. Cheaper than Yamaha.

Finally got around to it...ordered the '10 ball joints and they fit right in there. Just had to buy the little spacers that go on the top and bottom of the ball joint.
The ones that were on it weren't like the older ones or the newer ones, although they most resembled the '10 ball joints, they have a much bigger hole, bolt, and waaaay bigger spacers...they even had a zerk fitting(zerk fitting on a-arm to lube the ball joints!).
I want to know where they got the ones that were in there!!! I threw the old ones away, but still have the bolt and spacers. The machine has 10k miles and I bet they are the ones they put in there from new. I hope I'm lucky enough to get 3k miles out of the ball joints I just put in.
I might call up the dealer that they bought it from and see if they know anything about the ball joints that I just replaced.
Here's a picture of the spacer that was in it, and a stock spacer...huge difference.
