Today my die hard Polaris mountain rider friend came over to have a look at the Apex. Checking out suspension and Ron noticed damage to the rear exchanger. Wouldn't of thought with the tunnel protectors there this would of happened. Track is 1.25 and studs 1.325 but obviously they're hitting! I have some old sliders around somewhere so will probably rivet some 1/2" high strips onto the metal ones already on the machine.
Anyone else have something similar happen?

This in on an LTX right? This is common. The ripsaw has soft lugs and will bend some allowing the studs to hit the cooler. You have to put extra protection on the tunnel protectors. After sorting threw lot's of posts for a year now one guy that had the same thing happen said at least 1 1/2 in clearance between cooler and outer protector up to the back of the Bogeys. Any further up the track will rub.

I just studded mine and riveted an old Hyfax on top of protectors. I hope this does it. If it doesn't I'll have to add more. Or take the studs off.

I don't know if there is a sure fire way to prevent this out here yet. I've seen guys rip the cross over piece under the muffler on some sleds. I'm not sure it's the long track, short track or both that it happens too.. But I'd get it out to 1 1/2 in. at least for now.

Maybe someone who runs LTX or ATTAK with these studs will give a good answer. Trouble is lot's of guys chime in that have short tracks and confuse the issue or just speculate.

I'll find out this winter..

Thanks for reply and info about the 'soft' track. Yes it is a LTX. Looks as if the tips of studs are 'clipping' the exchanger cooling fins. Don't seem to recall really bottoming out suspension so may get worse if I did.
I have a couple thoughts, first being to rivet some sliders, same as you, onto existing rails... was thinking 1/2" but after being told about 'soft' track... may go with thicker.
My other thought would be to put spacers between existing protecters mounts and tunnel.... dropping it lower. Maybe a combo of both?
Is it possible to drop rear suspension rear mount bolts or worthwhile? Probably be top heavy then changing center of gravity. Just throwing out ideas.
I looked up length of tunnel and didn't see anywhere else with similar markings.
Bummer 'cause I really want studs.... acceleration is the fun factor but much more security/safety when braking and cornering.... at any speed.

Thats normally from a tail landing. Sure dont miss running studs. lol Eric

This is the post were he says to make it at least 1 1/2 in. page 3 near the bottom.

I'd read all 3 pages.

.I don't think you have to drop the track. With the sled on the floor I took out my Bogey wheels. Then raised the sled in the air. I used an angle drill to pop rivet the Hyfax onto the protectors.
In your case you have to measure how much you need to add. My 07 Attak had the cooler added on after I bought it. It is a different cooler.

You will have to put more then just the Hyfax too get this amount. Home Depot sells Aluminum Flat stock, etc. You only need it from rear of sled to just behind Bogey's. Taper it as you get to the Bogeys.

This post shows some of the lamination tricks to achieve this http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php? ... c&start=15

I tagged mine, just rivot a used hyfax to it and you should fix the problem.

That is typical for that cooler as it is installed. Yamaha still can't take a hint. You know how much travel that cooler costs?

Unreal that they keep using that cooler!

Hey Yamaha, Install the cooler on TOP of the extension. The track hits the std protectors without the cooler. What do you think is going to happen when you lower them by 1.5"? Shame on Yamaha for being so stupid.

I just had to vent. Why can't they seem to get these things right? Its not rocket science.
