This is the hardest fact for people to understand. Knowing WHEN to lay down the POWER is a acquired skill few people have learned. Traction is paramount.Proper modulation of the application of the fun flipper will be required.

I have run the pre stud on a 290 apex for several years and never had a problem. Not the same traction yes but no fear of throwing a stud in cooler which I have done before. I love the pre studs.I wouldnt run a single ply track with that much horsepower. Youre 1, 120mph trip across the lake from blowing your track out.
I run 11 psi on the trail on my Nytro, prob about 225 hp. So pretty much the same power level as a sidewinder will be with a free flow exhaust or a low level tune. Unless youve rode a sled at this power level before, the acceleration is insane. You need real studs if you want to hook. You cant really compare what works with a stock Viper and assume it will work with the sidewinder.
Ive raced my brothers stock viper with my Nytro, I wish i had it on video for shits an giggles. Its like were not even racing, the turbo just pulls sooooo much harder. If you ride mostly off trail, maybe that 1.6 cobra will work. On anything hard pack, the lugs will fold over, youll get crap traction and youll prob lose most of those little studs in a couple thousand kms, if the track lasts that long.

You are a brave man running a single ply track with that. Those 290 apex are no joke. My buddies that used to run mcx apexs around here all used to run hacksaw tracks with real studs. They would all change the tracks every season as well, just so they wouldnt blow apart at high speeds. All depends on how you wanna ride the sled i guess.
If your implying I don't run hard you are mistaken. We are aggressive trail riders that do high speed. Not drag racing on ice. I run as hard as anybody. And maybe I've been lucky but as I said never had an issue with a pre stud. Just sayingI know a guy with a hellcat that never even slightly lays a foot into it...I guarantee a 290 apex would never let a single ply live it was most ....you arent lining them up on the trail / road straights or a lake run with a single ply with pre molded studs against anything else of substance with real traction...
if you are mostly a cruiser and not looking to hookup hard...or not top speed runs....Im sure you could live with it...but who needs big power then...just sayin'
I'm not disagreeing with what your saying. Just stating I have had good luck with pre studs even with hi Hp. It's all good till it goes bad lol. Ironically I will be running the ripsaw2 that comes with my new sled anyways. No need to change a perfectly good track. Got rid of the apex and looking forward to trying the sidewinder. CheersOf course my statements are generalizations...I wouldnt know who rides which way...
and in general...Im under the impression that our brothers to the north (canadians) seem to high speed run...bullet train cruising if you will....which is different than some of our corner to corner running..not to mention lake racing with lots of dead digs....
We took a single ply off my buds renegade 800 etec and went rip2 and gained quite a bit of performance...then I did my mxzx800 etec the same and was amazed at the improvement..the rip2 is a tough and durable track...
the rip 1 , hacksaw and cobra are all soft rubber ...and IMHO less durable...almost seemingly less rubber content?
personally , I think the scavanging effect of the cobra will scrub some serious top end ....I know the draw...no worries of a heat exchanger issue...we've yet to have that issue on dozens and dozens of heavily studded machines....done right on a tough track like the ripsaw 2....its an extremely low risk IMHO and will outperform the cobra everywhere other than breaking trail I feel....then again theres a rip2 1.5" which might do both better ?
about the only thing I can see a single ply doing better is because it stretches so easily it makes the ride plusher (suspension has less resistance against it as the track stretches easier)
of course to each his own...report back how you like it!
I also have a viper and liked it just didn't want to turbo it so the sidewinder just made sense.the chassis dynamics on the SW compared to the old ape will blow you away...about the only issue in the ride and handling dept .I foresee is the ski's
