Can I run 100 Octane aviation fuel in my RX-1 ?

100LL (low lead) is leaded fuel with a high amount of lead, quite a bit more than old leaded car gas. It uses the lead to boost octane.

Is there any benefit or downside to running the first tank of the season with this fuel ?

Thanks, MTV

I'm no gasoline chemist, but unless the avgas is going to waste otherwise, it sounds like a waste of pretty expensive fuel to me. The machine should run the same as if it were on 87?

it will kill any alge/fungus growing in your fuel system but otherwise no real benefit.

Unless boosted or on N2O it's a waste. If you get the fuel for free go ahead and run it, your sled will make less power running on 100LL compared to Regular 87 pump fuel.

Blue is so cool, I bleed blue

If you put a lot of miles on the sled it will actually hurt the motor. The compression ratio is not high enough in the stock motor for high octane. You will not burn the fuel and lose HP and have carbon build up on the valves as the hot unburnt fuel exits the valve it cools and forms deposits on the back side of the valve seat. The higher the octane the lower the flashpoint.

It is just like diesel fuel which requires high compression and high pressure fuel injection to burn clean.

i'm positive that avgas is set up for altitude, so you will lean out due to the specific gravity of the fuel. same jet less fuel!
