Was hoping others thoughts might help me determine which model apex is for me, standard or xtx. Always owned shorties in the past v-max, mach z and viper and now coming off an 04 warrior
I really like the extra traction of the longer track as well as the bridging of big bumps. I'm a small guy @ 5' 6"170 lbs. always run studs in the center on all my sleds as I will with my new sled. My problem being I always felt my warrior took a lot of effort to steer in the corners due to the longer track.
I love knowing with a longer track I'm getting more power to the ground on all conditions. I drove a non studded apex se last season in loose snow and didn't seem to bad.
I'm thinking of going with standard 128 for ease of handling in the corners or does the EPS make the xtx feel like a short track in the corners? Would a studded 128 hookup well?

I found my self in the same position two years ago after I totaled my 2009 Apex LTX. I went used for the first time since 2005 and ended up with a 2011 Apex SE. I have one season on this sled and so far it is the best sled (Apex) I have owned to date. Power wise its awesome ride is awesome and the EPS is just plain sweet. In my situation I didn't want a payment and at the time the SE was the best out there even drove quite a ways to get it. 8900 was a awesome price with 1800 miles for a sled that was 15K new so couldn't pass on it and wait. If I was buying new though I really think I'd go with the XTX. All the benfits as the short track and really with EPS I don't think the extra lenght would be a disadvantage in any but the tightest trails. So I'd go with the XTX. I love the red color too. Only thing I would add to a XTX would be a set of Floats only because I personally like the shocks for ease of adjustment and ride other than that my vote would be for the XTX. Also the 2011 and up Apex is the best sled on the snow I went with a Ski Doo Renegade 800 for a short while but missed the power and torque that I sold that after just two trips with it. No where near the fit and finish power and ride IMHO. I think the weight of the Apex is a advantage more than a disadvantage again my opinion its more solid when traveling at triple digits on the trails when safe of course but I also know its well made. I have owned a 2006 RTX, still best looking sled IMHO and a 2009 LTX and now the 2011 Apex SE and the SE is the best sled to date. My next sled will be a Apex or equivalent whenever they make one with more power or when I destroy this one...LOL I hope this helps some. Ride safe but ride like HELL

One other thing the only advantage I really enjoy with the 128 vs a longer track is its alot easier to do BIG wheelies.

Does it hook good on hard pack with studs? I'm strictly a groomed trail rider and love the hard pack...

If you're strictly a trail rider, then stick with the 128" Apex. I bought the XTX, but it absolutely beat me to death. I adjusted and tried all different setting. After 2000 miles, I threw in the towel and got rid of that skid. The 128" mono has better and more forgiving trail manners.

Ditto the above. If you like the mono ride keep it. Just sold a 2011 Apex XTX because it beat everybody that rode it to death. Went to the 128,, awesome sled. If you like rough trail banging the XTX is for you, if you like gliding along on smooth trails go with the shorty. I have no idea why Yamaha dropped the 136 from the Apex line, but I cant really tell much diff going to the 128. The XTX is just not a cushy trail cruizer.northernsledder.jk said:misterbrutus03 said:MarkRTX said:One other thing the only advantage I really enjoy with the 128 vs a longer track is its alot easier to do BIG wheelies.![]()

here it is lots of twistys with some rough sections. the smooth stuff (when you find it) is usually pretty good until it gets humped up. once I got my xtx set I am quite happy with it. do I notice the length in the twistys? no. the tip-up makes it handle very similar to the 05 war with olins I came off of. I did have to upgrade to gytr's on the front as the stockers where valved way too soft for my riding area.

If on trail only, as I am ,I would go with the 128. Neither is a BAD sled they are both great.

I currently own both a 2013 Apex 128 SE & a 2011 Apex XTX Turbo. I just sold my 2011 SE after 3 great years.
I had the opportunity to replace my 2011 SE , Stocker with either a 2013 SE or or a 2013 Apex XTX. Both were factory demos.
I chose the 128 SE as you can see below in my sig. Nuff said I guess. My $ spent speak for me.
You need an XTX if you are gonna run a lot of boost IMHO but for a stock groomed trail Sled I believe the 128 is the better choice.
The Guys that have ridden both 128's say the Standard 128 has the best ride. I probably would have tried a Standard 128 had there been one available.

Agreed, each sled has its place. I, and mine, are long distance trail riders, and for us, the XTX is out of place. I wish Yamaha, and its dealers would try to market sleds to the right people, instead of pushing everyone to the "new" thing.yamadoo said:If on trail only, as I am ,I would go with the 128. I have had shortys in the past now drive a xtx and mostly trail ride. I will be going back to a 128 next time. 128 is easier to maneuver through the twistys and the xtx is a rough rider unless you change the rear linkage to a star setup then the better ride comes back. Good luck deciding.misterbrutus03 said:Was hoping others thoughts might help me determine which model apex is for me, standard or xtx. My 2 cents worth is, I'm happy with the XTX's, I have 3 of them, I ride 1/2 trail, 1/2 off trail. Sled gets around the twistys just fine. It's a dream with the eps and the tipped up rails. I tried out a shorty without studs and didn't think it could get the power to the ground, and back end was to loose in the corners. I don't like to run studs so the xtx seems to get alot better traction. IMO

Thanks everyone for the replies!!
So is the standard Apex or the SE with fox floats the better option?
