12V DC Source

Looking for a 12V DC source on a 2008 Nytro. It will be used for a GPS and a heated windshield. Are there any existing plugs that are hanging undrer the hood or do I need to find a source? Where have you guys found 12V for your devices?
 
I don't know where the source is but the 08's don't have an existing plug like the 09s do...ceck the FAQ section, I'm pretty sure there is something there that will point you in the right direction
 
Look at the fuse box. There is a white wire going into the box that feeds 3 fuses. The middle of the 3 fuse slots should be empty. There is a female connection in the box that would accept the supply side of a mini blade fuse, but there is no wire on the output side of where that fuse would go. I made up a male connector that goes into that female connection where a fuse would be, then just added an inline fuse downstream. That wire only gets powered up when the engine starts - same as the lights.

Another way you could do it would be to solder a wire onto one side of a 10 amp mini blade & plug the other side of that fuse into the supply side of the slot, then use a 3 or 5 amp inline fuse downstream. Hmmm - wish I had though of that when I did my connection.
 
Isn't there a white unused plug close to the battery? I believe that's for connecting accessories. (Maximum 30/35 watts!)
I ran a cable directly to the battery, with a relay so that it only provides power when the engine is running. Works very well ;)!

I added connector and output wire to the empty fuse location. I picked up a connector at a local auto parts store but it was to big for the fuse block so I had to file it down to make it fit. Now I have a keyed 12 volt source that is fused properly in the fuse box.

Nice - that is exactly what I wanted to do, but could not find a connector. Tried several parts stores around plus radio shack. Didn't find anything remotely close.
 
Guess I'm different.
I have my 12vdc fused and live . Then when you turn off the sled your GPS does not switch to it's batterys and deaden them. Plus when very cold and you stop to talk you can keep your shield plugged in and frost free.

I did the same thing. Only thing I did different was put the GPS line on a mini toggle switch by the speedo.

Yep toggle switch for both the 12 volt source and the LEDs! ;)!
 
I was able to find out that the brown wire to the ignition supplied a 12V source when key is in the ON position only. I used a neat little thing I found at Home Depot that has two channels for the wires. The ignition wire with the 12V source and the positive wire coming off of the 12V outlet slides into these channels then there is a metal clip that you push into the wires. It basically pierces teh insulation and makes contact wtih the wires and bridges the wires together. Then I simply grounded teh negative side of the outlet to a screw on the chassis. The setup is fused the same way the ignition is fused. Thanks everyone for there input and your ideas.
 
Its called a scotch block and I don't recommend using them. They are not sealed and tend to fail in harsh weather conditions. Soldering with heat shrink or using heat shrink butt connectors will hold up much better. I also would not use any feed to your ignition because a failure could leave you stranded. Do it right and come off the load control relay feed.
 
seeing as were on the topic of 12v accessories...My new 09 Nytro didn't come with the 12v accessory plug (cigarette plug) on the left side.
They are pretty pricey from the dealer, does anyone have a used one or know anyone? Also, will there be an empty connector for the outlet to plug into - or will I be wiring it up myself? Thanks guys.
