I'm wondering how everyone else's break in time has been going. I have a completely stock LTX LE with 137" track and have put on just over 100 miles so far. The sled struggled to pull over 8,200 RPM, even in short bursts, but would hold 8,000 RPM no problem. Granted the snow conditions were soft and temp was mid 30'sF. Obviously I didn't keep it there very long as I'm trying to stick to the recommended break in procedure. I suspect the engine and clutches are very tight and require some time to loosen up since it should pull 8,750 RPM and hit the engine limiter at 9,300 RPM. I have also heard rumor that there is some sort of electronic traction control that limits the RPM to 8,000 if the track is slipping. I've been in the industry for 20+ years and haven't ever heard of such a thing. Thoughts and comments of personal experiences appreciated. Thanks!

I spin all the time and nothing stops it from doing that but the flipper. When you hit 300 miles it's pulls like a train and the more you ride the more it pulls. You will be banging the rev limiter in no time. I have never heard of 9300 rpms unless you had a evo reflash.

Today I ride my 2016 viper xtx whit 160 miles on it
And it was reving at 8800 and pull hard
When it was new it bearly hit 8300
Today my top speed was 99 mph on hard pack snow
I didn't do a break in, pedal to the métal de first day
And it was reving at 8800 and pull hard

That a boy! Also how I broke mine in haha, just didn't hold it wide open for to long, she runs strong! Also how I broke in my nytro and it also pulled real hard and never had any engine issues in the 12,000 miles I had it. This motor likes to be rode hard and put away wet!

My bone stock 2016 ZR7000 137" has 400 miles on it.......It will not Rev. higher than 8100rpm
max speed on a very nice groomed trail was 86mph @ 8100 RPM
max speed on extremely hard packed road with no loose snow was
103mph on speedo and 102mph on GPS @ 8100 RPM
On the trail this sled feels like a weak 600 2-stroke that is severely over weight.
Buddies 2015 129" viper accelerates much faster, The viper was 2-3 mph faster on trail and road
The Viper RPM was 8900, it has 800 miles on it
I hope my ZR wakes up soon.
P.S. Ridden very hard, both sleds barely got 10mpg.

Alright, break in is important! It's not just for seating piston rings. The engine clearances are designed to wear and polish to proper tolerances in the break in period.
After the first step of break in (6000) rpm, you will see a lot more revs. At this point it's good to give the engine some big hauls but still do don't hold wide open for long periods ( load cycling). Most importantly do not over heat the engine during break in.
My ltx le has 700 miles on it now, oil changed and chain oil.

Ya. The hell with what the engineers that design the sleds say.

30 years pulling wrench....they do NOT tell you the best way to break in an engine in a manual....they tell you what is best for their purposes which won't give you a long lasting and powerful result.you need to seat the rings which results from high combustion pressure ...therefore wide open pulls ....racers break engines in on a dyno.....wide open pulls from first start.

- something from 2019!
those are the same engineers that designed the subframes, geometry of the suspension in the nytros... the starting gears, chaincase bearings, and the new connecting rods in these vipers... your point is invalidYa. The hell with what the engineers that design the sleds say.
its been proven time and time again that breaking in a motor "properly" the way the manufacture states is inferior to breaking in a motor the motoman way. but hey what does real world have to do with what engineers and accountants have to say?

I get your point. Break her in the way you feel fit.
Remember this is just my opinion.
I don't have 30 years of experience and this new sled is my first Yamaha break in. I still believe the first 100 miles is the most critical time for gears ( cam, crank etc.) clearances and surface polish. I'm not going to argue because I'm sure you guys have a lot more experience.
Enjoy the winter boys.

Well I broke in my 14 by the book and still vlew it up. The 15 I put 40 miles on it the week after I bought it last March and then the snow left. Had a little work done on it this fall now I just put 79 miles on it in 1 hour and 3 minutes just stopped for lunch then another 150 and calling it good. Besides if I break it in 5000 miles under 6000 rpms it will be out of warranty and I will have my funeral by then!
