well three weeks later and the dealer finaly got my sled apart to find out what was wrong with the motor. The bolts holding the cam shaft on backed out and were hiting the cover and head. New parts are on order and they think yamaha will be covering the whole repair even though the sled was two months out of warranty. I asked what the repair warranty would be and they said 30 days. Our snow is melting fast and that 30 days won't do me any good. Have any of you had a simalar situation could you buy an extended warranty. what should I ask for. This sucks and Since our season this year was two months long and I lost 1 month I didnt have my sled for half the season.

If they're agreeing to warranty an out-of-warranty motor, you really can't ask for anything more IMO. Parts take time to get, and engine rebuilds take time to accomplish. 30 days doesn'tn sound unreasonable to me. Maybe if your dealer really loves you he'll loan/rent you one of his used sleds cheap in the meantime?
Sometimes sleds will break down and ruin part of your season. So will cars and trailers and anything else mechanical. So you can choose to own a backup sled, or get a rental if you want to keep riding...it's a bummer but that's just the way it is. None of our warranties will ever provide a temporary replacement sled.
As for buying an extended warranty, I'm sure your dealer will be happy to sell you one if you want to give up another $500-ish. I don't know the details, but it's worth asking him abuot if you feel it would be a worthwhile spend.

Some dealers will hold a personal ck and release the sled to you while they wait to see if it will be covered.

Greg - If you have looked around TY at all, you know that your failure is VERY unusual!! These motors DO NOT fail under normal circumstances. I personally don't think it should have taken your dealer 3 wks to tear your sled down and diagnose, so maybe you weren't treated as well as you should have been in that respect(?) This repair would likely cost $2000 anyway - hard for me to say exactly without seeing what happened. Parts availability is usually the hold up as the parts for these repairs aren't on anybody's shelf!
It is too late for you to get the YES extended warranty but the only things it would have done is remove any doubt about you having to pay to cover the repair (which it sounds like you are already getting) and provide Trip Interuption and some reimbursal for towing/retrieval. I found it WILL NOT cover repairs outside the US.
Sorry about your loss of riding time but sometimes it pays to keep after the dealer (and also call Yamaha Customer Relations) to get (and keep) things moving. All of our toys have short seasons anyway. Breakdowns always hurt!

I'd like to share my history with Ski-doo my 2002 summit 800 went back to the shop 6 times one winter because it wouldn't run right and they ended up replacing the motor because of way over fueling to the point of washing down the cyl's and scoring them. After riding it once every 3 weeks all winter I was fed up with going 60 km (40 miles) on a tank of gas and got rid of that machine and went up to an 04 summit 800 which I also purchased new after the second season I Had to rebuild the motor and the dealer serviced the machine, leaving the chain case way too loose and I grenaded the chaincase 15 miles into a ride. Long story short this is common on two stroke junk! I am not the only one with failed engines on all that old crap. BUT KEEP IN MIND since 2003 there have been less than 200 engines fail in yamaha's four stroke fleet of sleds not including turbo and supercharged and other mods gone wrong. My dealer has only had one fail this year and it was under 16 lbs of boost with a gt28 turbo and it had less than 150 km on it. To call the new four strokes junk is a little harsh considering the companys around us have a 60-80% failure rate!!!
