Hello all

I'm new to the TY4 Board, I have a 2003 RX1 The i just recently added a White Knuckle GP1 Exhaust, K&N Air Filters, Springs, and Spark Plugs and 165 Main Jets....

Heres my Problem, down low it takes off like a Raped ape from 0 - 35 Mph, Any thing Over That she Starts to spit and Sputter. I can't get it over 75 mph, its acting like its starving for fuel. I've already Raised my needles as fars as they can go, and i've adjusted my carbs from 1 1/2 turns to 3 turns... and still the same problem. I've even went up to a 170 Main jet and it seems to run better, getting to around 45 mph before it spits and backfires... and i also sync the carbs. I'm ready to run the sled into a wall.... i'm looking to go to a 190 main jet, but would like to know if anyone else has had this problem... Thanks

As far as elevation i live in NY

Many 03 models have had problems with arcing spark plug caps/coils.I would clean then coat with dielecric grease. Also install new plugs since the caps tend to wear a groove into the threaded part of the plug which aggrevates the problem.[looser connection]

There is no possible way that a 190 main jet will be required. If so, I will buy that engine from you for 10K!

Like mentioned earlier check your stick coils for arcing. Peel back the rubber boot and either outside at night or in your garage with the lights off, see if you see any arc occuring. The Dielectric grease is a temporary fix but will prove wehter or nit this is the problem. I suggest purchasing new stick coils/sparkplug caps. Not aure where you are in NY but if eastern NY, you are welcome to bring to me in Connecticut.

I have installed new Plug cap and coil set already.... i should have mention that earlier... but theirs nothing leading to the spark end of things..

the way its acting leads to a fuel prbolem cause when sled is idling and you gun it, it runs find up to 80 mph and starts to spit and sputter... on the other hand while romping on it in the trails and lake, and then gun it... she spits and sputters at 35-45 mph... leading me to the Carb bowl is draining quicker then the needle and jets can handle

any other ideas... i'm all ears

Sounds like a starvation problem. Did you check all the lines are hooked up correctly and not blocked and/or kinked?

Problem could be a weak hose also. Ever see a water hose that was weak? It'll work fine until under serious load at temp and then hose will just pinch itself completely shut.

Make sure that you installed the mains in the correct location and not in the power jet location. If you don't have the updated float bowls and o-rings, I would do that and also remember to sync your carbs and make sure that your fuel filter is in good condition.

fuel starvation

there is a small fuel screen under the needle and seat #*$&@. check to see if they are pluged . i found them there in 03 and removed them as i have seen to many burn down,s with this being the problem. and allso with my fillter,s i got a fuel starvation on long wot run,s thus killing my top speed,s . so i installed an eletric fuel pump . problem solved. top speed came back . and no more super white spark plug,s . any thing that can effect the vacum signel to the fuel pump,s will reduce fuel flow. thing,s like fillter kit,s and or fillter mod,s cam shaft change,s, exh, change,s .

Black John, would you post some pics of the fuel pump install and a part number. I have followed your advice with regards to clutch setup and found everything you have said to be right on the money.

Made another go out it today....

tried my 190 Jets, all worked good up to 80 mph, and then it started to cut out again... acting like it was starving for fuel...

I've tried a 165, 170, 180... and now a 190 Jet... i've moved the needles to every setting and have adjusted my fuel screws from 1 1/2 - 3 turns..

The mods I have:

GP1 Exhaust
2- K & N Air Filters with Filter Covers
4- NGK CR10EK Spark Plugs
Black Carb Springs
and Assorted Jets
the carbs were sync each time i tried a new jet

Today its run the best with 190 Jets, and the needles all the way up...

i removed all 4 spark plugs and they looked like they just came out of box... leads me to believe i'm burning lean...

other parts i've replaced are spark plug caps and coils new fuel hoses and vacuum lines.......

i have alot of time and money into this thing and am ready to just shove it far back into the garage and walk away from it...

am i missing something or over looking something??? i'm ready just to throw dial-a-jets on it ........

Thanks everyone

jets

sounds like you put the jets in the wrng spot.double check it.make sure you change the jet located directly behind the pilot.you dont need that big of a jet,no way no how.

You didn't mention how many miles on sled, but another idea = fuel pump(s) shot? O.K. at low flow levels but can't handle high flow situations?

Well its been alot of hours and wrenching... but the 03 RX1 is up and running, and boy is she fast....

White Knuckle GP1
Dual K & N Air Filter Kit
Silver Springs
Needles on 4th Position
Carbs air/fuel screws set to 1 3/4 turns

and the key to making it run right.... 200 Main jets... thats right i said 200.... i tired from 165 to 190... 190 was the best but started cutting out on top end around 80-85... so i went to a 235 and ran pig rich... so i tired a 200.... and she sreams......
