got this sled this summer with 1500 miles the guy i got it from had a turbo on it and blew the motor up. he had the carbs all messed up fixed that runs great on the stand but when i tryed to ride it it would back fire and miss until it would foul the spark plugs. looked at the coils on top of the valve cover they were sparking all over the top of the motor . put new ones in it ran great no spark problems for about a mile down the trail will act like it is hitting a rev limiter every once and a while after about 3 miles runs worse and worse until it finally fouls plugs again. thinking now it is the stator checked the 3 white wires coming out of the stator should read 0.19-0.24 ohms but i am only getting 0.05 on all three of them. also checked the black and grey wires for the pickup coil they seem ok 191.2 ohms which seams to be within the specs for yamaha which is 189-231 ohms. any advice? i am new and this is my first post was wondering if any one else has had this happen to there sled. thanks :sled1:

check the voltage at the battery with it running. If you are not getting 13 to 14 volts it's probably the stator. Once the engine is running the electrical systems run off the power being provided by the stator and the battery is only being recharged. If there is no stator output then the battery will provide power until it's drained. As the battery voltage drops the engine will start running poorly until it quits.

I do believe a good way to test the charging system is, if you take the negative off the battery while the engine is running and it dies your charging system is not producing any power, it was running off the battery. Eliminate the battery and it dies like its been shut off, because it was. The usual culprit for the charging system to fail is the stator. Now on the other hand you eliminate the battery off a running engine and it stays running your charging system is at least providing enough power for the engine to keep running, but could still be weak.

yes but the problem is not happening until the sled gets hot i have seen this before on atv's and motorcycles the electrical system wont brake down until it is under a load and hot. it will start up and run on a stand with no problems but i dont want to over heat it in the garage either.
