I noticed this past Sunday that the engine seemed to be making a lot of rattling noise. I got home and opened the hood to listen and it sounds like maybe valves or lifters. The sled has 5400 miles on it and has never had any adjusments on these items. It is as noisy at idle as it is at higher revs.Should there have been an adjustment that i overlooked. Any ideas or info would be appreciated. It is not clutch rattle. The sound is directly in proportion to revs.It almost sounds like a diesel clattering. Thanks Combat

R u sure the noise is not coming from the primary clutch? You can tell pretty easily by putting an ear over the engine cam cover then over the clutch guard. G.B.

Gone Blue: I listened when I first got home at both areas, I even took the clutch gard off to get a better look/listen. It definitly is coming from the engine area across the top where the spark plug caps are. Thanks for any input. Combat

Bummer man, I would then say to check the chain tensioner like the others first thoughts. G.B.

Read" Exhaust Valve Tolerance" stream earlier in this fourm. Seams some people are having valve problems with about your mileage. Let me know if it is the valves as I'm trying to see if there is a connection between mileage/VIN's/and valve problems. Too many reports of valve problems with a bullet proof engine.

i have had a tensioner on order for 3 weeks. supplier tells me "warehouse" problems on yamaha's end(this was before the tsunami in Japan).

mine was making a similar noise around 6500mi
my first thought was valves
from the consensus it was exhaust donuts
i was going to change them at season end
it turned out to be a valve guide out of spec
it heated up an exhaust valve and it finally
broke off and took out the whole engine
sure glad it was still under warranty
i have 2000 on the new engine

When you say new engine do you mean a crate motor or did they just replace broken parts. They are throwing parts at mine for the second time, woundering if I should go after them for a whole new motor.

they wanted to just replace the broken parts
they don't have "crate engines in canada"
it was actually cheaper for them to change the whole engine
as the valve took out:
the head
the block
the crank
a piston
they had a "teaching engine" (probably a 2005)
that went into my 2007
i wonder if it had the cam chain update done??

2005 Rage with engine noises.
Thanks guys for for all the info. I just got my sled done with a new cam chain tennsioner. dealer said I caught it in time with no other damage. He had just done another sled who wasn't so lucky. The chain slipped on the gear and broke valves and wore the crank down. He said the only thing not hurt were the pistons. Spread the word. Thank You again Yammie guys you're the best.
