I am new to these four strokes so I am not used to them yet, but it seems like when I start it cold and let it sit and idle to warm up after a minute or two it wants to die. So I start to shut the choke down more but that just kills it. I really have to mess around with the gas and choke to get it to idle. Then even after riding it for 10-15 min. it will idle at about 1200 RPM or so but it is kind of rough. Anybody have any tips for cold starting and getting it warmed up. I am sure I just need to get used to it, but I thought some input might help me out.

Thanks

I just adjusted idle this weekend , the directions are on page 8-6 of my owners manual . Machine has always started well on choke then I turn it 1/2 way until the light goes out then I turn choke off and ride away ..Good Luck

I had a problem with my 05 Venture, with similar symptoms.

My pilot jets had gummed up sitting all summer.

Pilot jets on a four stroke are real small as compared to a 2 smoke.

Check your plugs. A couple of mine were wet and black.

I complained to my dealer and told him I put the sled up for the summer "by the book".

He cleaned and synchronized the carbs as a good will gesture, which made my day.

Just some thoughts. Hope it helps... ;)!

trlbrkr, you said you use 1/2 choke until light goes out, which light are you talking about?

hondo, I would agree with everything you said but this is a brand new holdover out of the crate. So everything should be ok to start out with.

Thanks for the info guys.

I start mine cold with full choke. After it starts I slowly move the choke to full off (with in 5 seconds) and let it idle to warm up. Stays running. Your idle is low, it should idle at about 1,400 rpms. You need to get it off from choke as soon as possible or you will foul plugs. At this point I would recommend replacing the spark plugs and starting it as I suggested above, let it warm up and check and set idle. It would not hurt to have the carbs synced. It will start better, idle smoother and have better throttle response. Just my 2 cents! :o| :4STroke:

Y1, how close is your dealer? My Rage acted very much like yours right out of the gate, full choke started up but hard to find the sweet spot for moving the choke so the sled wouldn't die but no way could I do like OH stated. I did figure out a happy medium and lived with it. Here is the interesting part, had my sled in for service and while they where working on it they noticed the carbs where dirty (only 500+/-miles) so they cleaned and sync'd them and now I can do just as OH describes. I now put seafoam in my gas from time to time since I have no clue how the carbs got so dirty.

You know I tried that and it doesnt work for me. What I do is start it up with the choke on full and shortly after i back the choke down to about half, where it seems to me that it does not choke the engine, but merely gives it a fast idle. I have tried letting it off and it just stalls. Also every time I touch the throttle it will stall too, so I stay off that as wel...

yeah x2thez, that sounds like what mine does too. How long does it take yours to warm up to the point where you don't need the choke at all. Mine I have to get it out and slowly ride it for awhile before it will sit and idle without choke. But it still idles a little rough and maybe a little low. I need to adjust the idle up a little. Not sure if that is going to help the idle at cold start or not? I will let you guys know in a couple days after I get it up north and put a few miles on it.

I leave it like that for about a minute or so, making sure that it will run without that fast idle of half choke, then i put it back to choke off and take a run. It seems to depend on the outside temp, i let it warm up probably longer than most just because I have seen what happens to engines if you go get on them hard when they are cold... I have done this about 7 times so far and had no foul or anything so it must be working fine.

DITTO !!!!!!!!!!!

That's my luck......First new sled I have ever bought and the carbs need to be taken off and cleaned and sync'd right out of the crate. Anyone have step by step directions on how to sync the carbs? Since I don't have a shop manual yet. Maybe I will try that first and see if that helps.

I would have my dealer do it, but it seems like dealers just screw things up even more. Plus I am heading home tomorrow for Christmas and can just work on it in a heated hanger myself.

I found with my Rage that when I first fired it up with full choke, it would idle high and after a few seconds, would start to bog. I then would bring the choke down to about 1/4 and it would level out for a few seconds. I would then shut the choke completely off and use the throttle to keep it at like 2000 rpm until the light turned off. After that it would purr like a cat!

I am having the carbs taken out and cleaned and syncd this year. We'll see how this works.

Yamaha1, have you adjusted the idle screw at all? It is the big screw with a philips head on the right?? side of the carbs. You can turn it with your fingers. My sled acted the same way yours did. If you turn this in half a turn it should work better. I would play with the idle screw a bit befor I pull the carbs apart. The higher the idle the lower the engine braking effect as well. When the sled is warm you can get a good feel for how muchof a turn is needed. I had my sled adjusted for a very low idle when I first got it. I liked the sound and lots of engine braking. I would give the idle screw a 1/2 turn in in the morning befor starting it to get it to idle properly.
