2005 Yamaha RS Rage
Hey all. I am new to this page. I recently picked up an 05 rage with only 620 miles. It sat in my cousins barn unused for the last 10 years. He paid to have a dealer get it running. It runs, just not to its potential. When riding I can only get it up to 7000 rpm or about 65mph. Is this the sleds max? I had a problem with the TORS already, and bypassed that. I have checked the tank filters, they look fine. Any help would be appreciated. I am leaning toward rebuidling the fuel pumps. What are your thoughts?

No where near its potential.

It should turn 8500 rpms( +- 100 rpm) and hit 95+ mph.

Sounds like dirty carbs and new plugs to start with.

Put it on a secure track stand and give it a couple whacks and see if it hits 8500 on the stand with no load. If not, again start with thorough carb cleaning and new plugs.

After that, look into sticking clutch weights from sitting. Make sure the weights swing free and that there's no rust on the clutch shaft. Same goes for the secondary. Make sure the helix and pucks slide.

Sounds stupid, but make sure the parking brake isn't on too.

I am currently in the central UP on a trip. It will crank up to over 8000 rpm, but won't maintain. It will only maintain about 65mph going across a lake. Down the trail today, I got it up to 72, but it wouldn't maintain. That's why I was leaning to the rebuilding the fuel pumps, it feels like it is starving for fuel. I pulled the plugs out, they looked light gray/ lean. I put in new cr8e plugs in it

Carbs are gummed up. That's why its starving for fuel.

That's what crappy ethanol does to them after sitting for so long. Plugs everything with a nice jelly.

I have been running ethanol free premium the last 3 days. I started adding a half bottle of sea foam when I filled up and I have hosed down the clutches with pb blaster a few times. Seems to be better. While riding it will get up to 7500 rpm and I can get 79mph out of it now. Slowly buy surely I'll get it figured out. I seem to be running faster speeds at lower rpms.

The Seafoam is helping unclog the #*$&@ then.

Definitely pull the carbs apart and thoroughly clean the bowls, jets, and inlet needle when you get home from your trip.

you do not want lube in the clutches as it holds belt dust in there and causes increased wear and sticking at times. rinse them out with brake clean to remove the oil. i usually clean ones that have been sitting by disassembling and using a scotch brite pad and brake cleaner to clean where all the bushings and rollers run.
