need help...new to the yamaha world. bought 2006 apex with 500miles....my riding area is hard packed however trails have 3/4in of soft snow on top of trail. burnt two sets of slides on saturday (drove 50miles). thinking of replacing 6 idler wheels with larger bomby wheels to take some weight off slides....maybe even installing extra set of wheel on back (not sure your thoughts)....the new yamaha scratcher has caught my eye as well, however i don't want to buy if not necessary.

got any pics of the wear pattern? did you measure them with a 10mm wrench - most of the time they burn down to the line and then last for a while. post up some pics and let us all take a look.

Do a search. 100's of posts on it.
You probably did not need to change them.
New slides burn in fast then pretty much stop.
Heat cycle new ones a couple of times and you should be good to go on 3/4 in of soft snow on hardpack.
I have over 5,000 miles on my original 2006 Apex GT hyfax.

I installed the low snow wheel kit at the bend in my rails. That's were they really wear fast. Going to be a long time before I'll have to change slides.

If you pull out your skid and go to change out the hyfax, just double check that your rails are straight. Nothing will burn out a set of hyfax quicker than a bent rail. Yours might be fine but I'd look anyways :flag:

Snow conditions are to blame, I've seen some days having to run with scratchers all day and others not have to worry, in find on milder sticky snow days worst or after a mild spell then turns colder the snow CRYSTALIZE'S and real bad for heating up HYFAX/SLIDES, or on real COLD! mornings hard packed trails is also a KILLER, in fresh powder no problems...SCRATHERS are your best invesment! I can easily get 6 to 8000kms on set no sweat! with YAM 130mm idlers on top of that...

All very good suggestions. Most folks are not used to seeing their hyfax go so quickly. Consequently, they get nervious and change it before they get to the point where the wear stops. Measure it with a 10mm wrench. When you can get that wrench to fit over it, it is time to change it.

Also, do not over-tighten the track. You run it as loose as possible. A lot of folks loosen it till it ratchets under full throttle. Then they tighten it up just enough to preclude the ratcheting. When I do that, I find that the track is set to the looser limit of the Spec.

Also, 3/4" of powder on ice will not effectively cool hyfax with a track that has 1 1/4" lugs. This is one time where it pays to do the math. You probably got the hyfax so hot that there is hyfax melted to the leading edge of the track's clips.

Go to Dennis Kirk and buy 0430 Idler wheels, they are 5 1/4" with replaceable bearings, $22.95 ea. I bought mine 4 years ago, same wheels for $20.95 and have the same hyfax, 5000K miles and still work great. I replaced all six. I do repack the bearings each year. They use the same Yamaha mount.

save your money on wheels and all that stuff, buy yourself scratchers and forget about it. i ran a mtn 162" down frozen trails with no wear at all. the timee i really noticed they worked big time was when i broke one and by the time i got home one side was burnt to the wear line and the one side with the scratcher was fine.

You could do this it works for me and my hifax look new yet after 900miles.
