Hey all, I have finally had my 'new to me' 2006 Apex RTX delivered and have started into a bit of the work that I have planned for the machine. This thread will show the progress as it comes along. The sled has only 3100 Miles / 5000 km on it but it does need some work. A couple of my friends 'bumped' pretty hard last year and this one came out with a pushed in running board and foot rest. I have already removed the decals and installed the new ummmm.. windshield. I can imagine how useless this thing is going to be at stopping wind..

That said, I also wanted to change a few of the base elements of the RTX.. I liked the Fox Floats when I rode it last year, but I didn't like the 121" track as it was FAR too easy to spin. After having read several positive reviews I sent of a quick email to Jason at Muffin Works and today I recieved their tunnel and rail extensions to bring the sled to 136". I have to say that the quality really does impress me!!

OH!! I also found one of these Megan Foxes on the eBay!! :bling

I'm moving into the four stroke realm from having ridden a 1996 Poolaris Xtra Lettuce n' Tomato for quite a few years. It left the shop for the last time in spring as an Xtra Lite Twin (PTO side) and I just wasn't gonna put any more into an old 2 stroke. The old girl was kinda purdy though!

The move to 4 stroke is a natural progression for me though as this..

..was a passion of mine for quite a few years.

So with all that crap said, here is a list of things that I'll be installing and taking some pics of as I progress.

1) Muffin Works 136" extension kit.
2) Fox Mega and front skid arm reinforcement.
3) Camoplast Intense 136"
4) Operation Black-out, dying of the seat and painting of the exhaust covers.
5) Tunnel and footrest straightening

looks like a great start, id check the front end bushings, there probably shot, replace with oilites. I would think about extrovert drivers as well. Just some helpful suggestions. Have fun they are great machines!

Hey 1973,
Thanks for the advice! I bought a set of oillites last week and have plans on getting to the front end once I'm done with the back. The extroverts are something that I'd really like to run also, I'm wanting to go with a 136" Intense, but I'm not sure how much room there is in that tunnel for a 1.5" lug? Those tunnel protectors are pretty close to the .75" Ripsaw already, what happens when a 1.5" balloons?
I did work on the sled for a bit tonight..
Installed the Muffin Works extension

and vinyl dyed the seat.

I think the Red / Black combo will look great.

Got a little further along today, I ordered a complete footrest from Yamaha so that I have a 'straight' reference to work from. Here's the foot well all stripped down..

The extent of the bend..

The skid, out and ready for disassembly. I'm quite sure that it hadn't seen grease since the showroom floor.

and, the correct way to call it a day on the sled.

Looks great so far Duey! ;)!

Just curious how many miles you had on your XLT when it let go?

I currently have a stock 95 XLT SP (gave it to me son) with about 8,000 miles on it and it still runs flawlessly but I am starting to get concerned with the motor with that many miles on it?

Heya Irv,
My XLT had 16186 miles on it when it went for the 2nd time. They are quite a good engine but I was done with it. I didn't want to spend a pile of cash on a 1996.

Instead I'm spending it on a 2006.. I'm finding more and more and more places to nickle and dime myself to broke. Every bogey wheel has gravel for bearings, the sliders are next to gone and a few of the suspension bushings are shot.
I was thinking about a set of aluminum wheels, but DAMN are they expensive?! $100.00 skins for the large and $80.00 for the idlers.. that's $520.00 for 2xLg and 4xSm, before tax and shipping. I can't see it, but they sure are purty!!

Are the DuPont sliders worth the money?

Yes get either the dupont slides or over sized excel x wheels, which have the replaceable bearings

I picked up some 2010+ Yamaha rear wheels and a set of Kimpex Yamaha knock-offs for bogies.

IMG_0774.jpg

The Kimpex wheels are 135mm so hopefully my purchase of vanity red sliders won't be 'in vain'...

I'll post more tomorrow when I get the time to straighten the tunnel some.

Oh, I also got some polishing done on the hood today. The previous owner had left the sled outside all summer and the paint was quite oxidized.. I threw some elbow grease and cut polish at the black with good results.

You can see the right side has come back to factory shine, whereas the centre and left sections have yet to be polished.

Just a quick question, I see you installed your inner wheels with the flat sides out, I installed mine the other way around.........does it matter which way they are??????????

I have actually swapped them around since this picture.. they measure the same either way. The bearings are centered in these particular wheels.

Waiting, waiting, waiting.. well, I ordered the footrest out of the States becuase it was almost half of the price that the local gougers were gonna charge me for it, however, it was ordered Oct. 20 and I have yet to see it arrive. It has shipped via USPS and hit the border on Saturday the 10th of November. Pretty poor mail service but considering that it shipped from NJ and considering the #*$&@-kicking that they've taken in the last 2 weeks, I can hardly be angry at that. I'm just itching to ride 'cause we have great snow here!!
This is what it looks like outside,

but this is what it still looks like inside. :crap:

So instead, we make sausage!! We have a good friend who runs a butcher shop at the farm.. it's always a great occasion for a bunch of friends to get together. Here's the smoke shack.

and DONE!!

IMG_0812.jpg

New footrest loop, it fit surprisingly well. All rivets fit tight.
The skid is ready to go in with the 136" Intense.

Post test ride, very happy so far!!

Huge thanks to Jason at Muffin Works, I can't say enough about the quality of their parts. I installed the their rail and tunnel extensions and they were really great to deal with.

Big thanks to you guys at TY4S for allowing me to lurk and learn here.. it's a great fountain of knowledge. TY TY :rocks:

Looks great. Glad we could help.
