I have a 2006 RS Nytro, had it up riding and it was giving me trouble when I let of the throttle it would bog down, throw a code (84), and backfire sometimes. I thought was bad fuel since it was the first time out, it did it a few more times but thought it was getting better as the new fuel ran through. Then it did it again and the machine shut off and would not start. No power to the dash and will not turn over. Checked the fuse box (all good), battery is up, and thought maybe it was the stater relay. I replace the starter relay and still has no power. Any suggestions where to look? Engine is free and all the plugs looked fine. Thinking it has to be electrical.

84 is TORS.

With the ignition on and kill switch up jump the two large posts on the starter relay to see if it rolls over. Code 84 is probably the throttle cable to tight and once the code is displayed it puts the engine in a limp mod. It takes several seconds for it to clear and if you get on the throttle to soon it'll trigger the code again so you have to wait until it clears. Another possibility is the no start and code 84 is related to a wire rub issue. Start at under the handle bar pad and follow the wires down looking for damage.

Jumped the post on the starter relay and still would not roll over.

If you jumped the large posts on the starter relay and it didn't roll the engine you either have a bad battery (or battery connections) or a bad starter (or starter wire). Most likely if it won't roll a very common problem is a bad starter. The internal magnets dislodge and wedge inside the stater.

Is it a pretty difficult job to replace that?

It can be difficult for some but actually nothing overly technical. You need to unbolt the front engine mounts and rock the engine to gain enough space to slide it out through the bottom.

But if it died on the trail, and he has no electrical functions, then it is not simply the starter motor, correct? Stator maybe? Check the fuse box. On my 2008 is is on the upper spar frame. I once blew a fuse and it just quit like yours.

He says it won't roll over even when the starter is connected directly to the battery (jumping across the starter relay) so if the battery is good then either the starter is bad or the engine locked up.

That's why grizztracks is the best for these tech questions! I'm still wondering why it died in the first place, tors first and then a bad starter?

Would I still have no power to the dash with the key in the on position? I cannot remember if it would light up before the engine was running. Thanks for all the help.

No, no lights or gauge sweep with just key on.

when the ECU detects the engine is running it activates the load control relay which powers the lights and gauge.
