I recently had a leak in my chaincase and it ran dry when out riding and now it won't stay in gear. Figured out it is a problem with the gear box, so I took it in (this repair is over my head). Just got a call from the mechanic and he says $1000 in parts plus $800 in labor (ouch)! Does anyone know if you can just buy the entire gear box as a single part so i don't have to pay all that labor to put it back together? or is there any source for used gear boxes? (I am calling this a gear box but most of the part suppliers on-line call is the track drive 2 and list a ton of parts). Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
The inside of the gearbox is really not very complicated, but if you buy the parts yourself (new) they will probably end up costing as much as a used box. There are usually a few for sale on ebay, ranging in price from about $250-$600 or so. If at all possible, I'd look for a gearbox from a newer Phazer, as the history of the sled it came from (and any problems it may have had) is usually unknown, and buying another used box from a 2007 model may leave you with the same problem you had before.
As far as buying the entire gearbox to minimize labor, I'm guessing it won't save you much. In my opinion, rebuilding the gearbox is a small percentage of the entire job of replacing it. You could always run it by your mechanic and see if he can give you an updated quote for removal/installation labor, using a gearbox you provide.
