2008 Fx nytro RTX ski options.

This is my first winter riding a 2008 FX Nytro Rtx and I noticed that the sled does like to dart. I've done a lot of research on this site and would just like opinions on the matter. I am looking at changing skis to prevent the darting and to make the sled steer easier.

I mostly ride trails so i'm looking for something that is trail friendly but also it must be affordable (under $300). I've read about various brands and also have read about placing Nytro mountain skis on and that makes the ride better.

Please give me some input on different brands that work great and/or if the yamaha mountain skis work well. I'm not look for a night and day difference just something that would make it a little less work to keep up with the group while we are in the woods.
 
Tons of info on this if you research it. I have 6.9 pilot skis with 6" shapers on the center and 4" shapers on the outside. Work very well so far. Skis are cheap but carbides can get pricey. You could just run the center carbide to stay under the 300.00 mark.
 
I run mostly trail on an 08 RTX and have been fighting the handling for the past three years. The cheapest way to cure the darting is to install Stud Boy Deuce wear bars on the stock skis. I was able to get my Nytro to handle fairly well through the tight trails with no darting and very little ski lift. I later went to the 5.7 Pilots with a few different combination of wear bars to try to cure the push I got out of the Stud Boy setup. I hated the Pilots on the 08 Nytro. I didn't have any darting but they where very temperamental to changing snow conditions. I felt much more comfortable with the stock skis and deuce bars. This year I went to the Kimpex Arrows and so far they seem to work well but I don't have a lot of time on them yet. I'm leaving for a four day ride in upstate NY next week and should get a good feel for these skis. I'm sure I'll need to do some adjusting and I also have a set of shaper bars to try out before I'll say they are the answer.
 
I initially tried different carbide setups on stock skis with various degrees of success. At the begining of last winter, went to pilot 5.7's. Did not have a great amount of success until went into suspension setup, then sled handling seemed to improve. I agree these skis seem to be very reliant on trail conditions. i don't think skis are a simple bolt on and miracles are going to happen. You still got to set up your sled right. I've talked a few guys who think their sled handles great with stock skis and very little trial and error. More power to them, maybe some of us just expect more substance and less bling. LOL! :drink:
 
SlyDog Skis

I had the stock skis with dually runners last year, wasn't very good. Put on SlyDog trail skis with single 4" carbides, whole new sled. Front floats in the powder, very little darting, very good in the corners. very light steering. Very happy with them. 2008 FX Nytro

I have run alot of different skis. I have CA's and Slydogs in the trailer. I also have some Proto Type skis. My current choice are the Curve skis seems to float well and JUST PLAIN work the best of any of the skis I have tested with

Boritzer, before investing in skis, check your front suspension bushings and ball joints for slop. If you've never changed at least the bushings out, I guarantee the front end is loose.

Lift the front end of the sled off the ground so that your skis are dangling free. Then grab a ski loop and tug back and forth and side to side and see how much the ski spindle and A arms moves.

Think of how all that slop reacts when you are out on the trails...your ski toe alignment can change significantly from being toed out to in, causing a lot of darting.

Once you get rid of all that looseness in the front end, and your skis are toed out 1/4-1/2 inch, then ride it and see if you are still experiencing all that darting. Then start looking at carbides and skis if you want better performance.
 
I'll have to look into that, the sled's front end is currently lifted so it will be a quick and easy check. I have just over 3000 miles on the sled so that could be a solution before skis. I guess I havent had a problem with the steering as much as my girlfriend has driving it so i was just looking at making it easier for her when I can get her to ride with, but this could also make me realize how good the handling could be also.
