Hi all!

It's that time of year again! The trails crossing state land are now open! However the trails that cross private land will not open until December 13. That means the trail leading out of Newberry just north of the Railroad tracks won't be open until this Sunday. If you drive another 3 miles north on M-123, there is a side road (County Road 446) that has another trail head down at the end (across from the cellular tower) and the trail from then on should be open. There is a good solid foot of wet snow on the level everywhere, but I'm guessing a lot of the swamp trails aren't froze up real well yet due to the warm November. With the cold weather predicted in the 10 day forecast, I'd venture a guess that this snow is here to stay. Should be good sledding around Christmas/New Years!!
:letsnow:

Update 12-22-2009

All trails are officially open except....

The trail between County Road 500 and the Falls is closed currently for some (hopefully) permanent upgrades (culverts to fix the water holes). Hopes are to re-open by 12/23, stay tuned. Other than that...the Falls trail has 2 loggings sites on it making the going a bit rough where they have plowed.

The Pine Stump trail is looking pretty good, with around a foot and a half of snow on average on the ground so far.

The trails south of Newberry have quite a bit less snow with 6" to a foot of snow on the ground.

The forecast for Christmas is wet, heavy snow but we'll just have to see how things shake out.

Update 12-28-2009

Well we survived Christmas (no small feat with all the RAIN we got) with some snow left to make a base for the snow we are getting right now. The cold and snow that is forecast into the new year should definitely help bring the trails up to good condition. On the ground I'd say we have around 8" on the level, though the trails south of Newberry are in tough shape. The trails north of Newberry are pretty good other than the two logging sites up on the Falls Trail. Playing around off trail isn't too bad right now. There is enough snow to stay off the ground, but not really enough to have any fun carving (though you can't really get stuck either).

Update 1-4-2010

Happy New Year (and DECADE!).
Well, the snow just keeps piling up! I blew 5" out of my driveway on Saturday (1-2-2010) and I already ave +8" in my drive again this morning. This combined with highs in the 'teens and lows in the single digits should definitely improve all trails. The powder is really starting to stack up!

Keep in mind that there are still two logging sites on the Falls trail, one north and one south of the Skyline trailhead. It is plowed and will be rough at times.

Also the south trail from Rexton to Epoufette has 7 miles of plowed road due to logging operations.

In case there are some snowmobilers that haven't been through in a while, the "old east ally trail" through Newberry is closed on the north end as there is a new Civic Center across it. It appears that the next street to the east is the new trail. Follow this link to see map of trails through Newberry as published by the local snowmobile club:

will also be in newberry for the first weekend of Feb. getting a little worried at this point. annual trip with the families. we sure don't look good down here.

Hi Guys,

Sorry I haven't been updating the thread as much as I should, I've been out trying to ride on the snow we had before it left. Having said that, well the trails are currently beat to #$%&*. If you are into off trail riding (logging roads, old forest trails, cut over clearings, etc.) you might have better luck. There is a lot of snirt (heavy on the dirt) for most of the trails right now. We probably lost a solid 6-8" of snow over the past weekend. Things look like they might turn around by this weekend but things are looking pretty rough right now. The forecast for a little further out (beginning of February) looks more promising. The outlook so far is for snow and cold. If that is so then the trails should heal up quite nicely. This morning I woke up to about an inch of new snow and my soggy driveway had firmed up quite a bit overnight. Its a start. Stay tuned.

Update 1-28-2010

Well we are indeed getting snow and cold as predicted though the snow isn't coming as fast as expected. The conditions for riding should be vastly improved for this weekend than they were for last weekend or earlier this week.

Update 2-1-2010

Things are looking really good right now! The trails have healed up nicely. The forecast is for mid 20s with snow so I think conditions can only improve. The south trails (Rexton, Naubinway, etc.) are still in pretty rough shape from what I've heard but I can only speak for experience about the north trails (Pine Stump, Seney, Grand Marais, etc) and they are in very good shape. I did some off trail riding on the marshes last night and found that you really have to be trying to get stuck. We did find some wet spots but no one punched through. Its very difficult to find good boondocking snow right now. There isn't a whole lot of powder or really deep snow but if you are looking to trail ride the conditions are pretty damn good.

thanks Stu, wife and I will be there Thursday afternoon, rest of the group on Friday. looking forward to it. was a bit nervous a week ago. trails down here are alright, but marginal at best to the east. thanks again.

Update 2-4-2010

All looks pretty good for this weekend, there isn't a lot of snow predicted but there aren't any really warm temps predicted either. The weather should be good for riding but it doesn't appear that there will be much new powder for a little while. Bases on the trails range from 8"+ in the north (Pine Stump, Paradise, Seney) to maybe 3" in the south (Rexton, Troutlake, Naubinway). Have fun and be safe!

Well Stu, we had to cancel. yes those are tear drops
on my keyboard. maybe towards the end of the month we will try again. Im gong to go cry in my beer now! thanks DY
