- 2011 Apex SE
Ok my buddies 06 RTX has always been a very strong runner but I would have bet my 2011 Apex SE would beat it especially thru the low and mid range. Sleds were about dead even from 20 mph roll on till about 110 when the rtx would pull a little. Now the rtx has a Woodys Yamaha power up kit which was geared down to a 23 top overdrive sheave silver secondary spring and 3 degree timing key and a ram air lid. My 2011 Apex has a Ulmers PCV and clutching both are studded equally. I had a 06 RTX and always thought my 2011 was quicker especially mid range. Only thing I'm thinking is I'll still running stock gearing in the SE. Race was on a lake with little loose snow. I know my 09 LTX was faster than the SE on the big end but I'm thinking I need to drop to a 23 and maybe adjust my clutching 10600 max rims on my 2011. Maybe I need to run around 10800 that's where my 09 LTX liked it. I'm also running the Ulmers air box mod with bullseyes in the lid. I wanna crush him and shut him up for once.

Rolling start against a 2012 SE with 104 studs with no other mods and my 07 Attak with stock gearing, Excel exhaust, Ulmer clutch kit,ram air lid and 108 studs was no contest. He just keeps pulling away from me.
I felt defeated and lonely.
Compare my Attak to my buddy's 06 Attak with only 108 studs. I launch a bit better but never really gain through out the run.
My Attak against a bone stock low mile 06 Rtx was no contest. Left the Rtx watching the tail light on the launch and gained all the way thru on him. But I have to cut that Rtx some slack. His transfer rod was set to Max.
I know of an used Yamacharger coming up for sale soon. Now that will help your sled crush that Rtx.

On 11+ Apex, the optimal max rpms should not be as high as 06-10', per Allen Ulmer, 10,500-10,700 is the sweet spot due to EXUP and shortened air horns in air box.

The air horns are actually longer in the 11's on up. I think D&D Racing sells a kit with shorter air horns, similar to the previous years that are supposed to make a pony or two.

My rims have been around 10600 but I'll have to make some runs myself cause my son was the driver I'm currently riding a new Sidewinder. But with the mods on the 2011 Apex I would think I'd crush the RTX especially in the low to mid range but maybe a gear change to a 23 is needed. I never did that mod. But I will say my buddies 06 RTX has always been a runner. One thing that bugs me is my buddy never does maintenance let alone tunes or makes any adjustments where I always maintain my sleds all my vehicles. But I would think a 2011 Apex with my mods should beat a older Apex except for maybe top end. Time to make a few adjustments I guess check my EXUP and gear it down. Anything else I should try or adjust?

And I don't doubt that but I would think with my mods Ulmers power commander 5 with airbox mod and Ulmers clutching would beat it given his generic mods. He has a 3 degree timing key overdrive sheave geared down 1 and my old ram air lid. Nothing big. I guess the power up kit from Woodys Yamaha in Maine is one hell of a kit especially for the price compared what others offer for the Apex and the cost associated with those mods. Maybe I should talk to Woody he's raced yamahas for years and knows how to make them fast.
