I have read numerous post about the Apex not getting top end, mine included. I was also concerned because the belt did not ride to the bottom of the secondary and to the top of the primary as evidence of the belt marks.
I had my secondary apart to clean and get ready for next season when I decided to compress the secondary with a clutch tool that I built. The purpose of the tool is to expand the secondary to help remove the belt.
I found that I could not compress the secondary enough to get the belt to set at the bottom of the clutch sheaves.
I removed the spring and checked the belt fitment . It did not go to the bottom.
I machined some material from the outer cap, reassembled, and found the belt to now go to the bottom.
I then put the spring back in and I couldn't get the sheaves to open wide enough to get the belt to go to the bottom.
After much investigation, I found that the coil spring binds and doesn't permit the clutch to open up and allow the belt to drop down.
The stock spring is pink. I then replaced the pink spring with a silver spring and found that I no longer get coil bind and that the sheaves now open enough to allow the belt to drop down in the secondary. My only concern is that the spring will not be strong enough. I can always work on the primary to compensate.
Unfortunately, I will not get to try until next winter.
In the meantime I will do research on finding a spring with the same tension, but one that will not coil bind. The other problem with coil bind is that it can ruin a spring.
Any suggestions will be welcome.

I made spacers years ago that sit on the helix towers. They space the helix out 4mm allowing the secondary to open more. I've seen people use lock washers also to do the same thing. My spacers have been on every one of my yamm's since 97... You are correct. The white and pink springs are 6mm wire diameter and bind up before full shift.

Hmmmm... Interesting thread. Can you see any performance gain from spacing the secondary. Allowing full belt movement?

Under ideal conditions you can gain a few extra MPH. The big plus is having more shift out time on the 51* portion of the helix...

How does the shifting characteristics of the secondary change when you do this? Did you have to go a hole tighter with the spring after the spacers were installed?

if your using pink the silver has more side force if that's not enough use a white at 3-3

if your looking for a performance gain, soft engagement Dalton industries has red primary ddps-r red secondary dpps-ymr red no more coil bind . Dalton helixes are machined so they do not contact the secondary hub.53\ 43 ph.902 897 3333

Re: spring
Am I missing something?
My Yamaha service manual indicates that the Pink spring rate is stronger than the silver spring which would indicate more side force.

Re: spring
Yes, the silver has less force.

With the pink spring still wrap at 70?

Hey Jim, thanks for sharing your research. Having the belt go right to the bottom of the secondary would only happen on perfect conditions ( plowed ice road, etc) but if racing that Ski poo or Cat in those conditions any gain is a good thing!!!
