The exhaust is more free flowing, and since the engine monitors everything on the front end, and nothing on the exhaust side, the ecu doesn't know to add more fuel to compensate for the lean condition you now created by adding the exhaust. You don't need one, but you'll probably lose performance by not having one. Just because its loud, doesn't mean its faster.

If it's just the muffler you would be fine but once you change the header you will do more harm than good if you don't put a fuel control on it also.

I have had the Barkers Exhaust for 2 full seasons now and haven't noticed a performance issue.

well I just looked at their website and the second option on the list for the nytro says and I quote "Yamaha NYTRO FUEL CONTROLLER Recommended for use with NYTRO SLIP-ON"... that to me would be a sign that it is needed if you want to see any real power gains. if your in it for just the sound go for it, if you want the 12hp that they CLAIM for a slip on muffler you probably need the fuel controler.

Lol, You will NEVER get 12 HP from a slip on

X2! Maybe 3-4 at most. (Downhill with the wind)
If you have a full exhaust, and no fuel controller, and you don't notice a difference, then the throttle flipper doesn't meet the handle bars enough!

What sort of engine damage could result with a lean condition caused by a header and silencer installed? I'm thinking of installing a complete system without the controller. More for sound and a couple HP wouldn't to too bad either

A lean condition could result in a pistion or Valve melt down. Usually a burnt valve. I put a hindle on and had the lean condition. Popped left and right. Added a PCV and no more popping.

dont do that, waste of money, who would pay big bucks for a system that does nothing but make more sound? if you like annoying popping and banging while riding go for it but a full system without a fuel controller is a dumb. and if you do it long enough WILL damage your motor.

thats why I capped the "CLAIM" in my statement. for that fact alone I would stay away from barkers system. they lie and inflate their numbers.

If you can gain 12 HP with a slip on.....Iridium spark plugs should give you another 10hp! LOL
That is total crap. A slip on adds mental HP and maybe 1-3 real HP and if you can feel that, you're more sensitive than me.....A full exhaust is probably good for 6-8Hp and will need a controller as well.
If you want a bigger HP boost, a full exhaust and intake system combined with a fuel controller will make you maybe an extra 10-12Hp, and that's about it. You'll need to clutch it as well to get that power to the track.
I am extremely happy with my MTX power gains, which I estimate at 10-12hp. To get that gain, it took the combo of K&N/Excel/Yoshi/PC5 and Ulmer clutching. Every buddy who has tried it feels the difference right away.
This is a super common setup that lots of guys are running, and it really places the Nytro near the HP realm of the 800's.
Want HP beyond that......BOOST!
